Obama Scholarships For Moms: Yes, You Can Improve Your Future

There are some bright spots that should encourage you to look to the future even though the US economy is going through some tough time right now. The government hopes to encourage women to go to college through Obama scholarships for moms. Mothers of all types have an opportunity to get a quality education. This will no doubt benefit their families and future employers. Federal Pell Grants make Obama scholarships possible. By making some changes to the Pell Grants, Obama and the government put emphasis on encouraging moms to go back to school. Unlike before, Pell Grants worth more than $5,000 can be awarded. That's more than $1,000 more than the previous maximum for these grants. These grants are intended to help low income students, and this includes single mothers in many cases. For this reason, the government is encouraging moms to go back to school. Money to help them enroll as college students can help both stay-at-home moms and working moms. There are other benefits to these grants to add extra incentive for moms to go to school. It's common for students to choose to attend large colleges or universities. For a single mom who didn't have this option, it may have prevented her from going to college. The Pell Grants take this common factor into account. These special grants make it possible for a working mom to attend college part-time or a stay-at-home mom to take online courses. It doesn't matter what you want to study, from nursing to business to education. The important part is that now single moms have more opportunity to do so. An Obama scholarship may be the break a single mom needs to start on a different path. Applying for a scholarship involves a few simple steps. The first step is to go online and fill out the application for federal student aid, or FAFSA. It's free to fill out the application, plus you can learn plenty of information about aid that is available to you. Remember this: the American Opportunity Tax Credit program says the first $4,000 of your education is free. When weighing your options, think about this as well as the possibility of getting a grant. Working or stay-at-home single moms now have a great opportunity to continue their education in college. The objective of the government grants and free opportunities is to help moms take better care of their families and increase their earning potential as members of the workforce. The Obama scholarships help women have the chance to improve their family's future as well as their own.

Why Specialization In Language Translation Matters

By Gurudev Singh

The demands of today's market require that competent professional translators specialize in specific fields of knowledge to render accurate translations. Just as it is not a good idea to hire a technical writer to write a legal contract, one would not use a technical translator to attempt a literary translation. Both activities have to do with translation, but they involve a completely different skill set.

Some of the fields of specializations for translators are:

Health Care Industry

Medical translation services are vital to providing quality care to foreign language speakers. Hospitals, emergency rooms, doctor's offices, public health organizations and nurses' stations utilize Spanish to English translators to help make the check-in process easier, as well as obtain accurate patient information for patient records. Medical translation services assist in the translation of medical records, consent forms, insurance claims and medical histories. Research labs also use language translators to assist in translation of clinical trials and research, as well as patents and licensing. Medical equipment manufacturers often require the use of Spanish translators to write manuals and instructions in the appropriate language for Spanish language users who will be using the equipment. Catalogs that contain descriptions of the equipment also require careful translations so that customers can read and understand.

Law

Law firms rely on accurate translations to help them with every aspect of their work with non-English speaking clients and countries. A good legal translation will take the English-based version of documents such as discovery papers, mergers and acquisitions materials, patents and trademarks, summons, immigration paperwork and wills, and translate them accurately into/from the foreign language. Many other people need certified translations to submit their paperwork for legal or immigration purposes.

Finance

Banks and insurance companies use translators to translate documents routinely for clients as well as to communicate with partners and associates in foreign countries. Financial institutions often require professional translators to work on business reports, research, minutes, agreements, financial statements, contracts, public offerings, policies and claims, proposals, and litigation, translating documents from English to foreign languages.

Business

The business community also needs the services of professional translators. Good translators are sought after by public relations departments for translating marketing documents, advertising and catalogs into foreign-language versions for their customers. Our clients also provide foreign language speaker with the documentation in their own language as investment information. Businesses also use interpreters who work on the telephone, translating customer messages into the appropriate language for the company. Other business applications include the translating of web pages. Because of the global reach of Internet websites, it makes sense to ensure that your web pages can be read by those who speak the target language.

The craft of the language translator is as specialized and demanding as in many fields of knowledge. Be aware that when you need to translate important documentation into/from a foreign language, you seek the services of a professional language translator who will be trained to offer a well written and accurate rendition of your original text. Don’t look for just a bilingual colleague; look for professional translators that are native speakers, trained as translators, experiences (more than 2 years) and with a high degree of specialization in their fields of knowledge.

Tips For Finding A Japanese Translator

By Gurudev Singh

Translating into Japanese is no easy matter given the complexities of the Japanese language and script. If you need to translate sensitive materials into Japanese, it's important to select qualified professional Japanese translators.

The quality of Japanese translations is critical when the text is for business, legal, scientific or technical purposes. In an effort to save money, some people and companies assign their translation work to bilingual amateur translators and end up with documents of doubtful quality. This is an acceptable practice to translate informal communications. But If you expect clear and effective communications with your Japanese clients, friends or employees, look for a qualified translator.

What makes a good Japanese translator?

Not only must a top quality Japanese-English translator be proficient in the two languages, he or she must also have special training in linguistics and expertise in a given field that would have its own special vocabulary.

1. They must be native Japanese speakers

Since Japanese culture is so distinctive in the world, it is absolutely necessary to have a native Japanese speaker do any translation into Japanese. There are actually two forms of Japanese considered standard: hyōjungo, or standard Japanese, and kyōtsūgo, colloquial Japanese that is spoken by the people in casual situations. The Japanese government has taken steps to modernize Japanese so that there is less distinction between the two; nevertheless, your professional Japanese translator must have an ingrained sense as to the appropriate Japanese expression to be used in any given situation. Any misappropriation of formality is particularly offensive in Japanese.

2. Excellent writers and linguists

Even for a native speaker, a special aptitude for language is required of the professional translator, and he or she must demonstrate a facility for capturing the entire meaning and tone of the source language and reformulating it into the target language. Artistry and precision are needed, as well as specialized training in linguistics.

3. The details

Professional translators are dedicated to delivering quality translations with the utmost attention to detail. Any translation can convey “sort of” the message and intent, even one produced electronically. When your accuracy and presentation really matter, make sure that your translator pays careful attention to every detail of grammar, diction, usage, style and format so the end product seems to have been originally written in Japanese.

4. Years of training and experience

When dealing with demanding translations, look for Japanese translators that have at least formal translation studies and a couple of years of professional experience. Translation of marketing or media material also requires special training in order to transmit the most effective message with an idiomatic vocabulary. Whatever the nature of the translation job that you need, selecting the right translator will make a huge difference in the quality of the translated text.

5. Experience in the Subject Matter

Translations often require that the translator is highly proficient in specific fields of knowledge: for instance, software engineering or legal contracts. Make sure that the linguist that you are using is well versed in the terminology and style of the field.

In short, if you or your business relies on accurate communications use a qualified translator.

Get Off The Rat Race And Enroll In A Wealth Creation Academy

By Steven Miller

Who does not want to be wealthy? The pursuit of wealth is a passion that drives many people. This is why many people in the corporate world burn themselves out as they run the rat race and climb the corporate ladder. This is why people with the most mediocre of talents would endure embarrassment just to make it big in show business. This is why people gamble at casinos or buy lottery tickets. These are the conventional paths that people take in order to strike at wealth.

There is no shortcut to being wealthy - or so the sages say. If you want to be wealthy, you have to work hard. But what if we prove the sages wrong and say that there is a shortcut to attaining riches? There is a proven way of earning money in such a way that you get to do the work only once. After you have done the work, all you need to do is to sit back and watch your earnings grow exponentially.

If you want to find out how this shortcut works, then you have to enroll in a wealth creation academy.

Why Enroll in a Wealth Creation Academy?

Why should you enroll in a wealth creation academy like 21st Century Academy? Conventional wisdom teaches us that right after we graduate from school, we have to strive to get a good job that pays really well. Once we scored this job, we have to work hard to keep this job and to get promoted to a higher level until we reach the top level on the corporate ladder. After we retire from the careers we have built for ourselves, we can enjoy the fruits of our labor.

But why wait until we are 65 years old to enjoy life when we can do it much, much earlier? Life is a journey that must be done slowly and leisurely, or else we will miss out on the beautiful moments we could have savored along the way. Do we have to wait until we are 65 years old to be able to travel the world? Do we have to wait until retirement to be able to bask in the warmth of our families, to read the books that we want to read when we want to read them, to live our lives the way we had always wanted but could not because we are so busy with our jobs?

Life does not have to be the rat race. When you enroll in the 21st Century Academy, you will find out the ways you can stop running the rat race and stroll along the path of life without having to worry about money.

Learn to Create Passive Income at a Wealth Creation Academy

There are many things you will learn when you get into the 21st Century Academy, but the key idea is that you can be wealthy now and live the life you think you are supposed to live by developing passive income. Passive income is the fruit of work you will only do once and then enjoy for the rest of your life.

About the Author: Steven Miller is passionate about learning wealth creation strategies and financial freedom with millionaire Jamie McIntyre who owns 21st Century Academy and it's group of companies. He is passionate about teaching people to get a 21st century education, and be able to get out of the rat race and be successful.

123di V5: A Review Of The Digital Photographer's Library In A Box

By Royce Tivel

Most of the books I've purchased about digital photography have only one or two sections I find useful when processing my images. This means that I've had to acquire a huge -- and expensive -- library of books, each having something I need from time to time, but no one book being comprehensive enough to serve as a first-choice reference. This means that, when I need information about some aspect of the digital workflow, I have to remember which book it's in, put my hands on the book, and then find the right page. Sound familiar?

Wouldn't it be great to have a comprehensive reference and be able to find needed information quickly and easily?

123di, "The 123 of digital imaging Interactive Learning Suite" seeks to fill this need for photographers at all skill levels.

Nearly all of my digital images need some processing after image capture. Taking those great pictures can be loads of fun, but the resultant images can be disappointing. When I need information about how to fix image problems and convert the throw-a-ways to keepers, I want to find it quickly.

As a photographer, being able to find the information I need *quickly* is *very* important. I found that 123di offers several ways to do this. In addition to reading the manual like a printed book, you can quickly find the information you want through

* interactive Photoshop graphical user interfaces,

* digital imaging workflow diagrams,

* custom bookmarks,

* interactive slide show,

* index,

* before and after images, and

* frequently-asked digital imaging questions.

Common image problems I often have to fix with post-processing include

* posterization,

* loss of shadow detail,

* white, overexposed areas,

* dust spots,

* a crooked horizon,

* wide-angle lens distortion,

* and distracting flash reflections.

Why do these problems show up in images? If you are like me, sometimes you just want to point and shoot. I don't always fuss with camera settings -- or sometimes I just forget a critical camera setting.

For instance, overexposure can usually be avoided by setting the camera to underexpose images by -1/3 to -1 stop: if this is done, detail in bright highlights are not likely to be lost. The camera's exposure compensation is adjusted to do this. Do I always do this? Nope! That's one reason I need a tool like Photoshop to correct such image defects -- and why I need a comprehensive reference manual like 123di to tell me *how* to use the tool.

123di makes it easy to find solutions to image problems like those above. For example, I had an overexposed image I wanted to use for a slide show. The image required a fix for posterization. A quick search of the 123di manual for "posterization," using the search feature in the extended version of 123di, turned up 48 references! Compare this result with what you find in the index of your favorite book on photography!

It should be noted that several problems might have to be corrected in any given image. Many techniques are sometimes required to bring out the best in an image. I confess, I haven't taken the *perfect* image yet; but, since I am not a photo-journalist, I don't have to deliver my digital images untouched by processing. I can use any of the techniques discussed in 123di to either make my images look closer to the scene as I saw it or just to make a beautiful picture.

Assisting the photographer to find information of interest was a primary goal of 123di from the start. In fact, the 123di manual includes a special section dedicated to how to find topics of interest quickly. This section is found in Appendix B, "How to Quickly Find What You Want in 123di." One of the ways uses an "Index of Keywords" that enabled me to quickly find appropriate sections containing solutions to the problems I often have to fix.

I accessed the index and easily found a tutorial on posterization with links to relevant sections for additional information. Solutions to the other problems listed above were also easy to find through the index, including how to remove disturbing flash reflections.

Having access to the index is great, particularly if you have the standard version of 123di. With the extended version, it is possible to search the manual for a single word and have all of the references visible as links in the search-results box. This single feature makes the extended version worth serious consideration for purchase even without the other features included with the extended version. The standard version can be upgraded to the extended version at any time.

The only real complaint I had about the standard version was that it did not have a similar search feature. Initially, I had purchased and installed the standard version. When I attempted to research the "posterization" problem, I spent a little time trying to find a search box in which to enter the search term. I ended up using the index to find the information I needed. I have come to expect an easy-to-find search form on the web pages I visit -- and the better web sites all have this feature as a usability enhancement. I would certainly welcome such an enhancement to the standard version of 123di. Also, although the extended version does have a search icon in the navbar, the search only allows a search for a single word. Many times, I do searches on the Web for phrases like "luminance masking." In 123di, I have to search for "luminance" and "masking" which complicates finding the information I need. A more enhanced search capability in all versions would be very useful.

123di has done a good job of helping users learn how to use the manual most effectively. My advice is to take the time and carefully read the first five introductory pages of the manual. These pages contain important information about the best way to use the manual and also provide an overview of the manual's content. As an example, on page 2 of the "Introduction," there is a section for "Practical Image Editing Techniques." Clicking the link to "image editing tutorials" from this section links to a list of drop-down selection boxes for problem-oriented tutorials. The drop-down boxes are

* Overcome Scene Limitations,

* Overcome Camera Limitations,

* Overcome Lens Limitations,

* Enhance Detail,

* Enhance Composition,

* Enhance Color and Contrast,

* Add Effects, and

* Create.

The drop-down box for enhancing color and contrast has choices for using levels and curves and for white balance. These are essential topics for image processing with Photoshop and are well covered.

If I had not spent a little time exploring the introductory pages, I might have missed this useful 123di drop-down feature.

123di features how-to coverage of several software packages for image organization, editing, and presentation.

Although I use Photoshop CS2 for my processing, it's nice to know that is it *not necessary* to purchase such an expensive piece of software to benefit from 123di. Image-editing tutorials in the essential sections are based on Adobe Photoshop Elements 2-3-4-5-6, a much more affordable software package that is often included free with today's digital cameras. Other software packages, besides those from Adobe, have similar methods of correcting image problems: the tutorials in 123di can point you in the right direction.

The image-editing tutorials in the advanced sections are based on Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Photoshop CS3, CS2, CS, and 7, including Photoshop CS3 extended features that are relevant for digital photography.

Once the images have been taken and processed, they can be optimized for presentation or display. Since most photographers are going to want to share their images on the Web, in slide shows, in screen savers, or with prints, knowing how to do this is very important. 123di shows how to do all of these things.

Perhaps the most valuable content in the 123di manual -- for photographers at all levels -- are the materials showing how to *avoid* image problems in the first place. This content begins with topics about digital cameras and their sensors and then thoroughly presents processing techniques that not only prevent or overcome problems -- but also make the images "pop."

123di is a digital manual available either through download or as a boxed set, and periodic updates keep the material up to date. 123 has versions for both PC and MAC users. There is also a special version for Nikon Camera users with coverage of software supplied by Nikon with their cameras.

123di allows installation on multiple computers. I particularly like this benefit as I use a desktop in the office and a laptop in the field. It is nice to know that I don't have to purchase an additional licence or unlock key for this. 123di allows installation on three personal-use computers and can supply additional unlock keys upon request.

123di contains much more than just the practical tutorials for image processing. It has comprehensive theoretical coverage on the technical aspects of digital photography. These sections are great for understanding technical areas and can even help you select your photographic equipment and use it effectively. 123di explains both the *why* and the *how* of digital photography.

7 Ways to Ensure Success With an Online Education Degree

By M. Jackson

Attaining an online education degree has opened opportunities for many students, especially those who find paying for traditional full-time courses outside their reach. But as much as acquiring an online education degree has many benefits over traditional learning, many factors play a role in order to make it successful for online students. Because of the differences in the way that online education is disseminated and acquired, some amendments in approaching this mode of learning need be put in place to make it a success.

1. Choosing the right accredited online college or university - The first step is to select the right institution to provide for your online education degree. Do your homework before starting school, and make sure the school has been accredited by the appropriate accrediting agencies. Unfortunately, without that educational stamp of approval, the degree will not be worth the paper on which it is printed. In fact, "diploma mills" offer substandard, or no education with the promise of a quick (but worthless) degree.

2. Analyze cost vs. benefit - Some students enroll in a distance learning program without considering the cost. Generally, the cost per credit hour is fairly expensive. However, decide whether the education will translate into better income opportunities down the road. Only after assessing the true benefits can students appreciate the rewards of obtaining an education online degree.

3. Degree validation by employers - No wonder many employers are wary of online degrees. With bogus institutions literally selling degrees, employers have good reason to be doubtful and cautious. Therefore, immediately alleviate any potential misgivings by your prospective employer by offering verification of accreditation through an agency sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Education and CHEA.

4. Practice discipline, time management and be determined to succeed - During the course of learning, many students simply lack discipline and are unable to focus. This makes it difficult to keep up with their online lessons and coursework, it is thus crucial for students in pursuit of online education degree to have a great determination to succeed. It is very easy to lose focus and motivation when studying alone. Exercising good time management and keeping in constant touch with classmates would increase the morale to succeed.

5. Utilize all the facilities provided by your college - Many education degree online courses provide online lectures and email access to facilitate communication among students, lecturers and administration staff. It's important to take full advantage of these services as they keep you "connected" with your accredited online college. It helps further your motivation in your studies when you make use of these facilities to stay in touch.

6. Make use of credit transfers - Many online education degree colleges allow students to transfer their credits from courses they took in previous colleges, whether online or traditional. By doing this, it means students don't have to repeat courses they learnt before. For this to be effected, it's important for a student who intends to pursue an education online to make sure they get transcripts and results from their previous universities or colleges and make them available to their accredited online college so they can be passed as transfer credits.

7. Using Educational technology is essential - The only way to facilitate an excellent online education degree is to take full advantage of all the educational technology available. Virtual libraries generally have all the information necessary to complete research projects and other assignments. The online materials have been factored into the cost of the course. The convenience is another reason for using this benefit to the fullest.

RC Pylon Racing: Turn Left - And Fly Fast!

By Royce Tivel

Recently, I attended a radio-controlled model-aircraft pylon race. I was not prepared for the excitement of the event. Both during and after the event, I wanted to know more about RC pylon racing. I talked with pilots, callers, and course workers. To learn even more, I decided to dig into the Academy of Model Aeronautics(AMA) rules and regulations for pylon racing.

A pylon race course is defined by three pylons. Each pylon is between 15-20 feet high. Pylon-1 is positioned at one end of the course near a signal board. The start/finish line is positioned 508 feet from Pylon #1 down the center of the course and 100 feet from a line connecting pylons #2 and #3. Pylons #2 and #3 were separated by 100 feet and formed the end of a triangular course.

Ten laps around the course equals 2.5 miles. The actual distance flown around the course probably varies between about 3 to 3.5 miles. This is so because the aircraft fly in loops around the pylons, have to fly around and pass traffic, and change altitude for one reason or another. The pilots fly their aircraft around the course in a counterclockwise direction, making sharp, left-hand turns only.

The course length was selected to result in 10-lap times between one minute (fast pace) and two minutes (slow pace for beginners). For the quickest aircraft, the speed around the course is typically between 180-200mph.

The signal board is equipped with red lights to signal when a pilot's aircraft "breaks the gate." The "gate" is a line from pylon-1 to the "flaggers" position not less than 300 feet away. As an aircraft passes this line, a flagger activates a light for pilot's assigned lane. A pilot seeing his signal knew that he could make his turn at pylon-1 without "cutting." There are also two white lights on the board for each of the four lanes. These are used to indicate a "cut" (a turn on the inside of a pylon). The cut lights are also controlled by the flaggers.

The start/finish line for the race has four lanes: a maximum of four pilots can participate at once. The lanes are designated according to where, on an aircraft, an identifying red or green decal is applied.

If you visualize an aircraft in front of you during a sharp left-hand bank away from you and around a pylon, one end of the wing will be higher than the other. Aircraft in Lane 1 or 2 have a decal on the low end of the wing; aircraft in Lane 3 or 4 have a decal on the high end of the wing.

Pilots apply a decal according to their assigned starting-lane position for a heat as follows:

Lane-1, green decal on the low end of the wing,

Lane-2, red decal on the low end of the wing,

Lane-3, green decal on the high end of the wing, and

Lane-4, red decal on the high end of the wing

A matching color scheme is used to indicate the lanes on the signal board.

Course judges use the decals to identify each aircraft. For example, a "Cut Judge" might report a cut like this, "Cut on high red."

Before the races begin, the pilots perform last minute checks on their aircraft, fuel them, and apply the colored decal.

The Contest Director (CD) conducts short informational meetings for both course workers and pilots. The course workers include cut judges, fueling supervisor, flaggers, and timers/lap counters.

After the meetings, the course workers occupy their stations around the course and the pilots for the first heat are driven to the start/finish line.

Everyone on the course is required to wear a hard hat for safety. Also, for safety, all course-worker stations are a minimum of 300 feet from the race course.

When the pilots are positioned at the start/finish line, a 60-second timer is started. Pilots have just one minute to start their engines and prepare for takeoff.

Pilots are prepared for takeoff when their aircraft engines are started and they are facing pylon #1 with both hands on the radio transmitter. Pilots not prepared for takeoff before the timer runs out are disqualified for the heat. As soon as all pilots are in position and ready to control their aircraft, the starter gives the signal to launch, and the heat begins.

From the start of a heat until the end, the aircraft run "flat-out." There is no remote-throttle control to vary the engine's speed

During the race, the pilot's partner, the caller, is of critical assistance to the pilot. In addition to launching the aircraft, and because the pilot's attention is so focused on controlling the aircraft, the caller determines when the pilot should commence a turn around a pylon and calls this out to the pilot. Pilot and caller teams typically have long-time associations, and are often family members.

Cut judges are assigned to each pylon in order to insure that the aircraft turn outside the pylons instead of "cutting" inside a pylon during a turn. One "cut" requires an extra lap around the course for a pilot's aircraft; two "cuts" disqualifies the pilot's aircraft from the heat. Cuts are indicated to pilots by the white lights on the signal board. When a pilot or pilot's caller sees a cut light for the assigned lane, they know that the point at which the turn commences must be adjusted.

After each heat, the winning aircraft is weighed to insure that it is not lighter than the AMA's minimum weight requirements.

Winners for the race are determined on the basis of several heats.

After the last race, both pilots and course workers return from the field for awards and prize drawings.

I live in the Pacific Northwest and the rainy season has begun. The pylon-racing season is over for the year--but you can bet I'll be at the next event held in my area.

I hope you enjoyed this article,

Teaching Yourself Spanish From Home – What's the Best Method For You?

By D Fraser

How should you learn to speak Spanish? It's a valid question, just because you've seen someone else learn from an audio program in their car doesn't mean that's the best method for you. We all learn differently and have different strengths. For some an audio course might be the perfect method, while for you maybe software with interactive lessons would help you learn to speak Spanish quicker.

The key to all this is to recognize that we all learn differently, and spend the time determining what the best method is for you to learn Spanish. I'm going to give a brief overview of both audio lessons and software programs for learning Spanish. I hope they can help you decide what the best method for you is.

Spanish Audio Lessons

It wasn't all that long ago that CD's just weren't available. Cassettes ruled the record stores, and when you wanted to learn a new language it was either get a private tutor or purchase audio lessons on cassette.

This method worked for a long time, and today thanks to new technology it's still working you just get your lessons on a CD or even in MP3 format.

Who is this format ideal for? Anyone who wants to learn on the go in their car or using an MP3 player should consider learning Spanish from an audio course. You get a lot of content for the money as there are often hours and hours of vocabulary and pronunciation lessons.

Learning Spanish Software Programs

Probably more popular then audio courses learning Spanish software is the next best thing to having a private tutor in your home to coach you through learning Spanish. Are they better then audio course? Yes and no, it really depends on how you like to learn.

Those that remember things they hear will do well with audio programs, but often times people pay closer attention to interactive and video lessons that come with software programs like Tell me More Spanish or Rosetta Stone Spanish.

The other benefit that software offers over audio courses is a more technical look at reading and writing Spanish. It's difficult to learn verb conjugation from an audio lesson, while watching it being done on a computer screen is much easier to retain.

So which Method is Best for you to Learn Spanish?

Honestly there just isn't one best method. As discussed it comes down to your personal preferences, what you expect to learn, and when you want to learn. For example someone who wants to learn on the go and is mainly interested in conversational Spanish should purchase an audio program. While someone with more time on their hands at home that wants to master Spanish as a second language will likely have better luck with a software program.

Take the time to consider your expectations for learning Spanish, also how you enjoy learning and how much free time you have to learn and practice. All these things combined will lead you to the answer of which format of home Spanish lessons is best for you.

How Do You Pick the Right Online Degree Program For You?

By Deanna Mascle

You want to go back to school. No, you need to go back to school, and you think an online degree program is the best way to fit an education into your busy life. Once you have made that huge, life-altering decision, the big challenge is to find the right online degree program for your future plans. There are a number of important factors that you must consider when choosing an online degree program.

First, and foremost, you must pay careful attention to the program's accreditation and standards. Some programs are purely online with no bricks-and-mortar location. many of these online programs are reputable and properly accredited, but not all, so be a careful consumer and check this out thoroughly. Also, make sure the program is credible in the field you want to enter. It would be a terrible thing to spend a lot of time and money investing in a degree that will not let you fulfill your dreams. Of course online version of traditional programs can also be problematic. While there isn't the problem of accreditation and status, not all traditional programs "do" online well. Creating an online class or program requires a different pedagogy and planning than the more traditional counterpart. Make sure your program gets the difference between online and traditional instruction.

It is also important to find out before you choose a program how supportive the online degree program is that you are considering. On campus there are a number of readily available sources to support your education, but what if you are not on a campus? Is there somewhere to turn for technical assistance? How can you contact your instructors and are they readily available to offer help and guidance? Is there library support? Is there a way to develop relationships with faculty and students? While what you learn in class is important, it is also important to remember that the sum of those classes is not the total of your education. Can this program offer the ability to develop a support network for after graduation?

Last, but not least, how expensive will your online degree program be? Some institutions charge more for online programs. Some institutions do not offer financial aid for online programs. Find out the facts ahead of time and plan how you will support your educational plans.

The best source of information about a program are students of the online degree program you are considering, especially graduates of that program. Students can tell you about the level of support the program offers students and how well designed the classes are for distance learning. Graduates can tell you about how well received the online degree is in the field. Do not forget to ask those students if they would choose this program again knowing what they know now. Ask the program for referrals but also seek out your own. Harness the power of the internet and do searches for the degree to find those graduates. Many people post their resumes and vitas to the web so you should be able to find some students. If you cannot then that might also be telling.

Things to Watch For Before Purchasing Learn to Speak Spanish Software

By D Fraser

Learning to speak a second language using software is a hot trend right now. It's the perfect way to pick up conversational skills quickly and for not a ton of money. Whether you want to learn to speak Spanish for a vacation destination, business, or maybe as a hobby, learn to speak Spanish software is probably the simplest way to do it.

Before you rush out to purchase just any Spanish lesson software there are a few things you should know about. Not everyone learns to speak the same way, and different programs have different features. In this article we'll cover four areas of learn to speak Spanish software that are important to know about before you buy.

Video Lessons or Audio Lessons

The first thing to consider with any Spanish software is the teaching method used. Most programs are either video or audio based. I like using videos to learn, how ever you might prefer listening to audio lessons while you're on the go.

A good audio Spanish learning program will supplement the audio lessons with computer based games, quizzes, and exercises to help with vocabulary, grammar, and writing.

If you think you'd prefer video Spanish lessons it is going to cost a few more dollars but it's similar to having a personal tutor right in the room with you. The videos teach more in a shorter period of time, and it's not just conversational Spanish but also writing, pronunciation, and more.

Important Phrases or Vocabulary Memorization

If you took Spanish in grade school then you're familiar with the memorization concept. As far as I'm concerned it doesn't work very well. Sure it teaches you lots of words, but that doesn't mean you can form meaningful sentences.

If you want to be a good conversational Spanish speaker in native countries then knowing 1000 different words isn't going to help. Knowing how to ask everyday questions, and converse with every day phrases is better. I'd opt for a piece of Spanish learning software that's emphasis is learning phrases rather then just building a huge vocabulary via memorization.

Pronunciation through Speech Recognition

This feature isn't offered in all programs but it really is the cats meow if you want to speak authentic Spanish. High end learn to speak Spanish software like Tell Me More Spanish will record you speaking Spanish via a microphone and then critique your quality of pronunciation.

This is the equivalent of having a native Spanish speaker evaluating your progress along the way.

Lesson Plan and Feedback

Something that potential Spanish learners often don't think about is the structure learn to speak Spanish software uses when you learn. A good program will provide an easy to follow lesson guide that says do lesson one, then two and so on. This way you're sure to learn things in the proper order.

If you decide to go for a program that has lots of great content, but doesn't do a great job at ordering it then you might spend a lot of time playing games, learning vocabulary etc. yet feel like you're really not learning to speak the language.

High School Students: Feeling Overwhelmed is Not Unusual

By Phyllis Zimbler Miller

Only a few weeks into the school year, a 9th grader at a very academic private high school is feeling overwhelmed. This is not an unusual feeling for high-achieving students because the pressure today to do well and “beat the competition” is intense.

Yet the FLIPPING BURGERS philosophy is somewhat different than the “get the highest grades and highest test scores” philosophy for getting into top colleges.

The FLIPPING BURGERS philosophy says that you should follow your passion in high school. This means trying to arrange a challenging but not overwhelming school schedule so that you have time to follow your passion outside of school.

And the advantage of following your passion outside school is that you will have to pursue activities that are not handed to you on a silver platter (the school’s own activities). Why, for example, join the high school drama club when you can join a local theater group near your home? In this way you will demonstrate initiative to the colleges to which you apply and your experience may be richer for having to learn how to “work” act) around adults of various ages.

If you are overwhelmed already and this is still early in the school year, consider whether you may be able to re-adjust your school schedule so that you have more time to pursue your passion and still take academically challenging (but not overwhelming) courses.

For example, this re-adjustment may mean saving physics until summer school where you can really focus on this subject and, in place of this course during the school year, take a less-strenuous one that will give you more free time after school.

In addition, take advantage if your school has free tutoring on any subject. Don’t wait until you fall behind. After you’re done on the first day of classes, go to the tutoring center and review the material with a tutor. THIS IS NOT A STIGMA!

Many people believe that getting help implies weakness rather than indicating strength. It is actually a much better plan for life to recognize when free services can strengthen your position and to take advantage of this available opportunity.

Each person learns in a different way, yet repetition of new material can probably help everyone. And, if you’re going over new material with a tutor, you might discover that you misunderstood something that, if not corrected, could set you off in a major wrong direction. Thus, by reviewing new material with a tutor, you can quickly discover where you’re about to go off track.

If your school offers such services and these services could be of help to you, do not refuse to go because you’re afraid this would make you look dumb. Instead, getting help makes you look smart – smart to take advantage of any help you can in order to make sure you’re on the right track.

If even with tutoring you are just not understanding a subject, you might consider whether you have an unidentified learning disability that is interfering with your success with this subject. Frequently students are able to unconsciously cope with learning disabilities until high school, when the subject matter gets too difficult to cope without having learned specific coping skills for your learning issues.

Whatever you do, keep an open mind. It is only by being willing to fail that you can learn something new. If you are set on always appearing smart, you will be prevented from taking risks that can lead you to new understanding.

The Rising Cost of College Education and Surviving Student Loans

By Sue Jacksonn

Going to College?

Public colleges and universities have joined the mainstream of schools with ever increasing tuition fees, making earning a college diploma similar to the quest for the Holy Grail. To give you an idea, a college degree can cost $17,000 sans grants in the least and some $60,000 if you are no scholar in an Ivy League school. Now it's clear why student loans exist.

The cost of a college diploma refers to the total expenses -both billed and unbilled. Costs not billed in your student slip are books, supplies, travel and personal expenses to include tons of pizza and trips to the Laundromat. You might also be paying room and board if you are studying in another state. If you want specifics, try a college search to see the whole picture and decide if you'll be needing grants and student loans to afford a diploma.

Canadian and US citizens enjoy federal funded student loans with zero interest for a period. Yet they still get part-time jobs for living expenses, as they still have to eat and pay other school expenses not incorporated into the federal loan. What if you are not qualified for a federal student loan?

Getting and Surviving Student or Personal Loans

Fortunately, private lending companies are offering lower interest rates for student loans. However with this privilege comes a responsibility. You have to pay your loan the moment you graduate and land your first job.

Private lenders issuing personal loans offer student loans for students who have part-time jobs or who can have their co-signed by their parents. The loan is similar in many ways to a personal or payday loan. To qualify you have to meet the following:

* Earn a minimum wage requirement of $1000

* Proof of 6 months employment

* Own a personal checking account,

* 18 years old or older

* A resident of the locality where the lender is based

You do not need proof of residency to get a loan but you have to provide contact information and the latest proof of billing to validate your address.

Ask your parents what it is like to live with a mortgage hanging over their heads or credit card interests piling up. You parents can only tell you that it takes a lot of sacrifices and personal integrity to pay up loans. Here is what is in store for you if you default on your loan payments:

* Accruing interest rates that would make the repayment of the loan a lifetime burden.

* Blemished credit scores that would affect future loans for a house purchase.

To survive your loans, do the following:

* Borrow only the amount needed

* Be careful with your spending

* Pay the loan on time to prevent additional fees and charges which you cannot afford

* Borrow only when you need money for school expenses

* Be honest about your capabilities to pay the loan before anything else

Student loans should not be taken lightly. As early as now, you are already shaping your credit worthiness, so do not waste your chances.

What is a Geode?

By Claudia Mann

The formation of Geodes takes place over millions of years and involves several different geological processes.

Hollow Rocks

So, let’s start at the beginning: how do you get a hollow rock with lots of sparkling crystals inside? Geodes start their lives as a hollow bubble inside a layer of rock. The bubble could be from air inside explosive volcanic rock or it could come from the hollow remains of animal burrows or tree roots.

What About The Crystals?

Geodes that form from air bubbles inside of volcanic rock are pretty easy to picture. Think about the small air bubbles you see in pumice. Now, imagine just one of those bubbles completely surrounded by black or red volcanic rock. As rain pelts down on the hot bubble, the chemicals in the rock are slowly released into the water. Some of the water soaks through the hard, rocky outside of the bubble and is trapped for a moment on the inside. As the mineral-rich water moves on through the bubble, tiny crystals are left behind, clinging to the sides of the bubble. Millions of years pass while this in and out flow of water gradually builds crystals inside the empty space. The crystal formations might become large single crystals or tightly packed micro-crystals, so small that you can’t even distinguish one from another.

An Animal‘s Home

Let’s check out the development of our animal burrow bubble… Long after the animal has moved on or the tree has died and its roots have rotted away, the sediments that surrounded the hollow are being covered up by layers and layers of sediment hundreds of feet think. Eventually the weight of these layers has caused the sediments to turn into rock: sedimentary rock. Just like our volcanic bubble, this animal burrow bubble is host to mineral-filled water flowing in and out through the hollow space. And just like the volcanic bubble, a wide variety of crystals are taking shape inside the animal’s former home.

Time Marches On

Fast forward to modern times. The water-soaked land where our bubbles began has become a vast desert where wind howls and the sun beats down. The ground, covered by rocks and scrubby brush yields up unusually shaped rocks. Today, you’ve found a good field of them and have three nearly-round specimens to crack open when you get home.

All Geodes Are Not Created Equal

The first one is quite hollow but for a nice layer of medium-sized blue crystals. These dugway geodes have bands of blue and pink. The colors come from the different minerals that flowed through the bubble so many millions of years ago. Another specimen is nearly solid all the way through. The microcrystals have formed wide bands of different colors and the tiny opening at the center has a thin ring of pointed crystals. Yet another is completely filled with solid rings of browns, reds and pinks. So, you’ve really found two geodes and one nodule. Nodule is the name for these round forms when they are filled solid.

Quartz, Calcite, Or What?

Most geodes have interiors made of either quartz or calcite. Quartz crystals are silicates. Silicates are the most common mineral in the crust of the earth. Over 90% of the minerals present in earth’s crust are silicates. With this said, you can imagine that silicates are a pretty big group with lots of variation in terms of specific chemical composition.

Calcite’s main ingredient is calcium carbonate CaCO2: dissolved calcium and carbon with some of the oxygen from the water thrown in.

Small variations Can Make A Big Difference

Now, add in a trace of iron or magnesium or copper and, voila, you have color variation.

Magnesium traces in calcite forms a nice pink dolomite layer, while magnesium in silicate accounts for the purples of amethyst.

Heat Can Change It

Now if your geode was close to a lot of heat, that could change the color, too. An amethyst that gets a lot of heat loses its purple color and becomes a soft yellow or citrine. You can see why there are so many color possibilities.

A Day In The Life

So, that little geode you’re holding has had quite a journey getting to your hand. Treasure it for its beauty, but also for its history and the complex composition of minerals that made it. You’re holding millions of years of work in your hand…enjoy touching the miracle of our earth’s creation.

Telekinesis For Beginners

By Kevin Forrester

So you've heard about spoon bending and you've heard about other psychic phenomenon that you thought would be great if you could just learn how to do it. The problem is that most people want to do it for all the wrong reasons and are mislead into thinking that it is something that can be done easily. You can't easily bend a spoon with just using you're mind and a few simple tricks. You can't read someone's thoughts easily by just following a simple guideline and the willingness to try. It will take real commitment and a true desire to suspend your self-limiting beliefs and accept in your heart that you are more than you think you are. You must accept and practice a daily regiment of introspection and meditation that will enable you to open your heart and your mind to the reality of the true power that we all have. The power to move mountains, the power to overcome disease and the power to believe in yourself. Telekinesis for beginners is not possible without the ability to suspend all these limiting thoughts and ideas.

" And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you". -Mathew 17:20. Regardless of your thoughts about the bible or its teachings this verse in the book of Mathew speaks volumes about the necessity to truly believe in what you are doing and that it is possible. We are only limited by our own belief structure and once we can come to terms with our limitless potential can we bring our beliefs into physical reality.

There is a technique you can use to practice spoon bending. Since we are all at our core energy beings it is important to harness that energy and direct it in a way, which will bring about the results you are looking for.

1. Meditate on your chi center, which is located just below your belly button area. The aim here is to clear your mind of all thoughts and to focus your attention on this area only. You will be building up the energy in your chi area and then redirecting it up your body and out through your hands.

2. Grip the spoon between your thumb and index finger. Rub lightly and feel the chi energy transferring through your fingers and into the spoon.

3. When you can feel a noticeable difference in energy built up just lightly put pressure on the spoon and if you have built up enough energy the spoon will bend.

This will take practice and will take time to perfect. It is important that you allow the spoon to bend. Don’t just will it too bend.

We all have God given powers to create anything we can conceive but we must never take these for granted and know that the true ingredient for success is gratitude. Worshipping at the altar of any denominational house of worship and giving thanks for all you have is not enough. We must connect at a different level, which includes our thoughts and feelings, and are ultimately fueled by true emotion and intention. Open your heart and mind to the certainty that you can bend the spoon, be grateful for the ability to be able to do this and there is nothing you can't do. Telekinesis for the beginners: It's possible!

About the Author: Train your mind and believe in your true potential. Accept that you are only limited by your own self-doubts and lack of training. Once you can believe in yourself you will know that not only Telekenisis Is Possible but also that anything is possible with the right training.

After the Online PMP Exam Preparation: Taking the Exam

By Jessica Parklanes

Your ultimate goal in engaging (and spending considerable amount of time and money) on an online PMP exam preparation course is in taking the PMP exam itself. Otherwise, you would have spent the hours and the more than $3,000 in vain.

If you are getting cold feet, your online PMP exam preparation review and work experience should give you the necessary confidence to follow through. But if you still have the jitters, then the following examination tips could help you overcome them.

Gear Up!

This is actually a no-brainer. You have studied long and hard before E-Day itself. On the eve of E-Day, you should get a good night's sleep and you should wake up refreshed. Your breakfast should be adequately nourishing but steer clear of gorging yourself. You have to perform your daily ablutions lest you find yourself in a smelly predicament.

Refresh Yourself

Before the clock starts ticking, you can ask for scrap paper. Only ask from the examiner lest you be accused of cheating early in the examination, which is a definite no-no. You can write down the formulas and the mnemonic aids you acquired during your online PMP exam preparation and readings of the PMBOK Guide.

You have to do these because formulas have a way of getting mixed up in your head, unless you are a math wizard. As to the mnemonic aids, the knowledge areas can be easily memorized by ISTCQHCRP but actually knowing which relates to what process can be mind-boggling. But that is what your online PMP exam preparation and readings of the PMBOK Guide are for!

Also, if you think of it as just another practice test for your online PMP exam preparation, then you will have lesser jitters.

Move On

The PMP examination has 200 questions that you must answer in four hours. You have a little over a minute for each question, including analysis and computations. As much as possible, you have to move on to the next question if you are unsure of the answer. Just mark it for review and come back to it later if you still have the time.

Your online PMP exam preparation test examinations should have a feature that provides for timed tests. This way, you will truly have practice pacing yourself.

Just always remember that time is of the essence. So, move on.

Answer Everything

Even if you have to guess (and you will guess at some point simply because the PMBOK Guide is no easy thing to completely memorize), just answer all the questions. You will not be deducted points for incorrect answers, so you might as well try. After all, luck can favor everybody.

Since this is a multiple type examination, there will be instances when all the answers look good and when all the answers look bad. Just answer them, anyway. If it is the former, then choose the best answer. If it is the latter, then choose the better answer. In a sense, you are choosing between the lesser of two evils.

Safe Assumptions

There are assumptions you can safely make, unless told otherwise, in the PMP examinations. For organizational problems, you can assume that it is a balanced matrix; for procurement problems, you can presume that you are the buyer; and you can assume that the sponsor is an external client.

Just do it!

How to Develop Telepathy

By Kevin Forrester

Telepathy is commonly described as mind reading, the ability to impress the mind of another person with a definite thought or thoughts without traveling through the usual avenues of sense. The word “telepathy” literally means, “sensing at a distance. (Tele – at a distance, and Pathos – feeling). So now we generally refer this to mean “thought-reading”.

How telepathy happens is still open for debate and we can’t say with any certainty why this is possible. Some are inclined to believe that vibrations travel from brain to brain, much like the signals in wireless telegraphy. While others contend that we have no proof that these brain waves exist and therefore can’t predict with any certainty the avenue of transference. However, most will agree that telepathy does exist.

The following exercise will help you to prove to your own satisfaction that it does exist and we can develop our ability to do it.

* Select a friend that will be sympathetic to the experiment you are going to do. One of you will be the sender and the other will be the receiver.

* Sit facing away from each other. Both of you with a pen and paper in hand.

* Dim the lights and leave the room in semi-darkness.

* The sender will draw a geometric figure, such as a square, circle, triangle or any other uncomplicated object.

* Clear your mind of all thoughts and look at the figure intently. Try to impress the picture on your friend.

* Keep each trial under a minute in length. When you go beyond this period your mind will tend to wander and lose focus.

You should will the receiver to see the picture, but don’t strain yourself in the attempt. Have complete confidence in the fact that he will see the impression of the picture that you are sending him. You must be positive and have no doubts that your friend will in fact see the picture. You must remove all self-doubt for this to work. This is very important.

Do not become frustrated and allow thoughts of negativity to enter your conscious mind. Imagine your thoughts traveling to him in a definite form, either in the shape of the picture or in the word, triangle, square etc.

The receiver should clear his mind as much as possible and write down any pictures or impressions that come to him, regardless of how insignificant they seem at the time.

Above all, early failures must not discourage you. This is inevitable, but with continued practice you will begin to see that the successes you are experiencing are more than mere chance. You will be well on your way to developing your powers of telepathy.

If you are having trouble clearing your mind and only focusing on the task at hand then it would be helpful for you to practice meditation at least once a day for about twenty minutes a day. The benefits in clarity of mind and success with developing telepathic abilities can’t be measured.

About the Author: The first step to perfecting any type of energy movements such as developing telepathic abilities is to learn how to silence your mind and relax your body. I have been practicing energy movements for many years and if you haven’t been getting the results you are looking for than I recommend you try the following: Increase Your Energy and Increase Your Power http://www.higherbalance.wordpress.com

3 Steps to Learn to Speak Spanish Fast

By D Fraser

It's an old saying, how do you know how to get somewhere when you don't know where you're going. This holds true for language learning as it does for most education and goals.

When learning Spanish you need to have a short term goal in mind. How well do you want to be able to speak? Do you just want to be able to ask important phrases in Spanish when you're in the air port, at a restaurant etc. Or do you want to become fluent in Spanish as a second language.

Knowing how well you want to learn Spanish will help you choose which way you learn as well as how much time you need to spend at learning Spanish each day.

Choose the right form of Spanish Lessons to Meet your Goal

So hands down the best way to learn any new language is to move to a country that speaks that language and live there for a few weeks. Immersing yourself in it and forcing yourself to learn. Unfortunately most of us don't have that option.

So, the next best options are private tutors or classes, as well as software and audio courses to learn from home.

The quality of software programs has come a long way, and many of them will teach you just as well as a tutor could for less money and on your own time. Not to mention you will have the software to refer to if need be in your travels.

I'd suggest choosing a quality audio or software Spanish course based on your learning goals. Some are better suited to learning important phrases fast, while others are a longer term learning situation with multiple volumes.

Spend time with it Each Day

Probably the most difficult step is staying committed to your course. You know your goal, you have the right software or course to teach you, now you just need to stick to the plan.

For some reason most of us fall down here. Try not to think about learning Spanish as this long journey. Take it one day at a time where you learn a new phrase or two. Increase your vocabulary, or pick up some new grammar.

Enjoy the ride on learning Spanish, don't worry about the final result while you're learning. The best way to do this is to commit an hour or so each and every day to studying Spanish. This will get you to your goal without feeling over whelming. It's also a good amount of time for our brains to remember what we learn, but not to much to over whelm us.

To get started you need to set that goal, then decide what method of learning is best for you. Audio is great for those that enjoy listening in the car or on an MP3 player. How ever for long term learning and to learn to read, write, and speak Spanish Software is probably the better option. Check out the link below for some tips on choosing the right software or audio program.

About the Author: Are you ready to start Learning Spanish? If so then take some time to visit our Learn Spanish Reviews. We've compiled detailed reviews of the top audio and software courses available so you don't have to waste time researching them all.

The Top 3 Reasons Why Smaller is Better When Starting and Running Your Own Martial Arts School

By Mike Massie

When I first released my "Small Dojo, Big Profits" martial arts business manual in 2004, it received a lot of criticism. Funny thing about that… almost all of the “critics” hadn’t actually read it – they just didn’t like the title.

So, what was it about those four little words that caused such a stir of controversy around the “Small Dojo, Big Profits” manual?

Think about it… the title makes a bold statement – that “smaller is better” when it comes to starting and running your own martial arts school.

Now, I’ll be the first person to tell you that there are a lot of people who do well running larger schools. However, none of those guys started big – every single one of them cut their teeth learning martial arts business methods by starting small and working their way up.

Even so, there are some very good reasons why you should consider running a smaller school… and by “small”, I define it as less than 3,000 square feet and less than 250 students.

So, here are the top three reasons why “small dojo” equals “big profits” when starting and running your own martial arts school:

Reason #1: Less Square Footage Means Less Overhead...

And not just when it comes to rent… you also have to consider the cost of heating and cooling a large school (which is an even greater concern now, with the rising cost of energy) and the fact that someone is going to have to clean the place.

I had a good friend who ran a very successful school in about 2500 square feet. He decided to triple his space, and then discovered his electric bills were outrageously high, and he practically had to have a full-time employee just to keep the place clean.

Want to know how long it takes to clean my school? Between 15 and 30 minutes, tops. And, even in the dead of summer my electric bill never runs over $250… less than my energy bill at home. Smaller really is better…

Reason #2: Less Students Means Less Payroll...

When I tell new school owners that they can run their school solo until they get to around 100 students, they think I’m crazy. “What do you mean, Mike… don’t I need to hire an assistant instructor and an ‘enrollment director’?”

Whatever the heck that is – in my school, everyone is the “enrollment director”. Just because someone wrote in a book 20 years ago that you need to have “X” staff members to have a successful school, doesn’t make it so. Besides rent, your second greatest expense is going to be payroll… unless you learn to keep things small.

And, even a martial art school with 200-250 students can be run with just you, a part-time office person, and a part-time instructor. Get up past 300 students, though, and it’s a whole different ball game. Repeat after me: “Smaller is better, smaller is better, smaller is better…”

Reason #3: Less Students Equals Less Headaches

One of the reasons you need additional employees in a larger school is customer service. Consider this… for every student you have under that age of 18, you are servicing two or three customers, not just one… which includes the student, and his or her parents.

Now, I don’t know about you, but personally I don’t want to spend all my free time taking care of all the “customer service needs” for several hundred people. When your enrollment is smaller (150 – 250 students) you can easily maintain customer service between yourself and a part-time staff member, and mostly during class-time hours.

Get much bigger than that, though, and you’re looking at hiring a person to staff your Pro Shop, someone to answer the phones, someone to clean the toilets… I think you get the picture.

Now You Know That Smaller Really is Better When Starting and Running Your Own Martial Arts School

Okay, so there they are – the top three reasons why “Small Dojo” really does equal “Big Profits”. I think you can see, what this really boils down to is keeping things simple, and not over-complicating your life and your school by getting bigger than you need to be.

And, if you’ll run the numbers (you can use the worksheets in my business manual, or make up your own using a spreadsheet) I think you’ll see that you can make a very comfortable living starting and running your own martial arts school with just 150 – 250 students.

Now, it’s time for me to go… I’m about to go spend some quality time with a good book and a cappuccino at the local coffee shop. See, I can do that every day, because I have this really neat little business that makes a killer profit with just a minimal amount of effort and time investment.

Ah, I love running a small martial art school…

One of the trends in the area of education is to lengthen the time students must stay in school. The reasons for this have been varied, but how valid are they compared to the value of independence, which is one of the attributes that comes from practice.

The ACT Government (Australia) recently released a consultation paper outlining proposals for raising the ACT's school leaving age. I want to say very strongly that compulsory schooling for students over 15 should not go ahead, not in any country or system. Why encourage dependence on the opinion of a limited number of significant others such as our teachers, no matter how good they are and predetermined subject coverage? Why should students who feel a failure in the school system be forced to continue with subjects that reinforce their negative feelings about their self worth and abilities? It is time we started valuing the great range of abilities and skills needed in the world and not placing so much emphasis on writing skills compared to oral skills and production skills (as in essays and assignment) compared to leadership and innovative business or selling skills, helping others or creative skills.

I have 3 children, two did not do Tertiary subjects and one went to university and managed to get some A's even though she did not appear to excel in her school subjects. The other 2 passed their non tertiary college subjects and have since done exceptionally well in their work fields. One has outstanding skills in the area of personal presentation and relationships - she is a social person and loves working in human resource management and is now earning nearly as much as me and I am a 'degreed' teacher. She completed her year 12 certificate at 17. She did not need another year at school! The other child is a performer and has leadership skills enabling her to succeed in initiating and enthusing others to perform. Like a "trade union" leader she was able to influence a group of performers not to take part in a festival until they were paid for the promised previous years performance. She is not interested in the ability to earn money and has enjoyed being a WOOFER, where she can do meaningful work and benefit the world. She finished her year 12 certificate at the age of 16. Should she be forced to stay in school longer?

I love teaching but at present no school system that I know has the resources and teachers trained in a big enough range of these other areas to cover all our students. At college we do not have a subject called "selling skills", "helping others", "leadership" or "serving skills" apart from being small sub sections of other subjects. In Australia the UAI is not god even though many strain for a high one in a system that tests in order to rank all students, and many people value it above other qualifications, devaluing the non tertiary subjects.

Lets move towards a system that acknowledges the worth of every person, for everyone has abilities that this world needs. There are many examples of people who have succeeded outside the school type subject areas....in money making areas for example and in helping others. Please do not work towards or agree to forcing our young people to do what they are miserable doing. Surely 15 years is enough of that. If they haven't done well in those subjects in that time, more time is not what is needed! If you continue doing the same thing, you are more likely to get the same past results.

Education is not education if it is compulsory...it is only schooling. Do we want to force round pegs into square holes or star shaped pegs into triangular holes? Are the skills and abilities we are forcing our children to have through schooling the best for their lifes work? What we value today may be tomorrows trash so lets free up a bit and widen our horizon.
