Effects Of Single Parenting

By James Gunaseelan

There is no denying the fact that single parenting is becoming more common today than at any time in the past and this may have to do with more time on the hands of parents, and their better economic situations. As people become financially more independent there is sure to be a corresponding loss of dependence on other people. This trend has extended even into the domain of parenting. However, the effects of single parenting are evidently not as dark and foreboding as one would imagine as the child or children can adjust to their particular situation without any serious and negative effects.

Nevertheless, studies do show a trend that the effects of single parenting can cause children to become maladjusted, and are at greater risk of having social and psychological behavioral problems. Even so, one must remember that the effects of single parenting due to divorce must be separated from those effects resulting from the divorce itself. To lessen the ill effects of single parenting, parents need to behave normally and maturely and thus minimize damage in the minds and hearts of their children. Some of the common effects of single parenting that are generally noticed in children include being stressed about finances, feeling isolated and uncared for, and also needing greater amount of support emotionally. It is also not necessary that these effects of single parenting are a direct consequence of divorce because they can also percolate down from parent to child through the parent’s behavior.

Probably the biggest scar that is left on the child of single parents is not having a healthy and strong emotional bond with the parent because there is one less parent around with whom to interact with. Single parents may also be busy with their working life and thus with just one parent the effects of single parenting will manifest them in reduced contact with parents, and consequently one less shoulder on which to cry on, or a missing helping hand in times of stress and disturbance.

With one parent around, there is not much security for the child who in any case is most hungry for that very feeling with which to survive and grow strong. However, all is not dark and negative for the child as there is also a silver lining to the dark clouds because one of the positive effects of single parenting is that children can learn to become more independent and self sufficient with just one parent around them. Necessity as they say is the mother of all invention. And, effects of single parenting are not just confined to only the child, but ramifications are felt in the parents as well. Thus, it is necessary that single parents and the child learn to develop stronger bonds and thus not feel the loneliness and despair of missing a vital cog in the family machine.

Single Parenting - Facts

By James Gunaseelan

Divorce is something that is becoming more and more common in today’s society, and as such more and more people are becoming single parents. This is not to say, however, that people are single parents because of divorce. Actually many people become single parents for a variety of different reasons, and it is because of this that people should be aware of some facts about single parenting.

(I) Yes, everyone is basically aware of this fact about single parenting. It is one of the most recognizable situations, because chances are that most people are aware of at least one person that this has happened to. Perhaps the pregnancy was unexpected, or perhaps they couple broke up. Either way, there is a teen mother alone trying to raise her child.

(II) When you are in a serious relationship, chances are that you feel more financially secure when both you and your significant other have careers. However, if you have a child, and the relationship breaks up, all of a sudden you are relying more on your one wage, and the result is that people often do not have enough money to properly support their child.

(III) Some people would like to have a child or children, but at the same time do not want to be in a relationship. Many of these people are successful professionals, who are more than competent enough to financially care for a child. Thus, these people either choose to adopt, or select artificial insemination.

(IV) Some people think that as single parents they are completely alone. This could not be any further from the truth, because as more and more people become single parents, more and more resources are becoming available. For example, there are various publications you can read, and classes you can take on this topic.

If you would like more information, all you have to do is search the internet. Be aware, however, that for every reputable website, there is also a website with information that is not accurate. It might take some time to find accurate facts and figures, but you are sure to find interesting information with the proper research.

Long Distance Parenting Plan

By James Gunaseelan

Parents of young children, who go through a divorce, have to put a long distance parenting plan into action, if one parent moves to another town. The purpose is to ensure that the children suffer as little as possible during this traumatic time. Very often, the court order of the divorce lays down a long distance parenting plan, which parents have to adhere to very strictly. A long distance parenting plan works well if parents continue to be friends with each other, and are determined to put the children’s needs above anything else. Divorced couples should realize that children need nurturing and support from both parents. Further, for the healthy upbringing of the children, both the parents should share responsibility, and maintain a civil relationship and cooperative attitude as well. The children need the emotional, physical and economic support of both parents to remain unscarred by the divorce.

The advantage of a long distance parenting plan is there are no surprises. The children are aware in advance of the time they are to spend with the non-resident parent. This is particularly important for the children to continue to feel secure despite the absence of one parent. Parents should make sure that they adhere to the schedule, and cooperate with each other during any unforeseen difficulty. The time spent with the non-resident parent may be limited, but the resident parent should ensure that children speak to their absent parent regularly on the telephone. The expenses for the trip to visit the parent are usually predetermined, but any other special requirement for the trip should be intimated in advance. Little kids’ bags should be packed with thought, with clean clothes appropriate for the holiday plan.

In order that a long distance parenting plan is successful, the parents should keep their lines of communication open at least for the sake of the children. The little ones should never be used to relay messages to each other: parents should talk to each other directly. Timings should be kept very strictly, and any change should be intimated in advance. This way, the children can be prepared in advance, and there are no surprises or disappointments. Parents should not talk critically about the absent parent, or fight with the spouse when they are together. Neither parent should pry about what happened during the visit, or at home. Children should continue to feel secure about both parents even if Mummy and Daddy don’t stay together.

Goals Of Natural Parenting

By James Gunaseelan

Natural parenting is gaining popularity with parents who find the world has changed dramatically over the past decade or two. The advent of electronic media and other developments has meant a change in the way a child is raised and in his or her activities. Advocates of natural parenting feel the child of today is losing touch with all that was considered essential to a healthy upbringing a couple of decades ago. This includes his or her family, as well as with healthy eating, nature and playing outdoors.

Natural parenting is also known as attachment parenting, and lays emphasis on strong emotional bonding between the child and his parents from birth. The advocates believe this brings in a great deal of security into the child’s life, and he or she grows up to be a secure individual with empathetic relationships. One can call it common sense and instinctive parenting, where quality time spent together by a family means much more than electronic gadgets and toys.

The promoters of attachment or natural parenting believe in eight ideals that foster emotional bonding between the parents and children. They include preparing for childbirth, whereby parents make sure that they are physically and emotionally ready to have the child. They eat better, stop smoking and drinking alcohol, and are relaxed and ready for the pregnancy. Both parents are involved in the pregnancy, and attend the antenatal clinics and classes together. Normal childbirth is usually preferred, and so is breastfeeding.

Advocates of natural parenting also encourage baby wearing, where the baby is carried closed to the parent in a sling, and co-sleeping. They believe the child should sleep in the same bed as the parents, as it promotes bonding and facilitates breastfeeding. Long separation of the child from his or her parents is discouraged, and disciplining should be positive and not punitive. A balance should also be maintained in family life.

Natural parenting is a rewarding experience for parents, and enriching for the child. It may be exhausting for the working mother to be so completely involved in her child’s upbringing, but it reaps rich dividends in the long run. The father should make it a point to spend quality time with his child. This could mean working together on some chores in the house, or sharing a hobby. The father could also learn more about the child’s interests, and occasionally participate in them.

Natural parenting lays emphasis on healthy natural food and outdoor exercise. Excessive television watching, or playing on the computer are discouraged, and so are junk food and snacks. In a way, it is turning the clock back, and may not be entirely feasible in large cities, but it is worth the effort for some.

Overprotective Parenting

By James Gunaseelan

Overprotective parenting seems to be on the rise, with parents getting increasingly involved in, and ambitious about their children’s activities. Overprotective parenting is often the result of parents forgetting their children are individuals in their own right. Very often, overprotective parenting is a result of parents viewing their kids as an extension of themselves. Everything they wished to achieve, academically or on the sports field, is thrust on their children. The poor kids are expected to shine as superstars instead of just enjoying what they do.

These parents fail to differentiate their children's desires and feelings from their own. They imagine their perfectly nice kids to be suffering from performance anxiety – purely a reflection of their anxiety about the kids’ performance. Tennis or baseball can never be just a game to be enjoyed with friends. The child has to reach the US Open or Junior League. Parents fail to recognize the child’s irritation at their interference, putting it down to sensitivity and anxiety.

Overprotective parenting often results in parents refusing to recognize and accept that their child has done anything wrong. As a result of overprotective parenting, children are condoned for destructive behavior and never have to face the rap for their actions. The parents thus validate unhealthy behavior instead of setting appropriate role models. Anxious parents shield their children from the consequences of their behavior. Thus, the child is always let off the hook, instead of being corrected.

Most children are embarrassed by their parents’ behavior as they grow older. They also resent the constant interference and anxiety about their performance. They wish the parents would back off and let them figure things out for themselves. Overprotective parents want to take the bumps out of their children’s lives, forgetting it is all a part of growing up. Life is not a spectator sport, and everyone has to go through good and bad experiences. Children learn to cope with failure when they go through a tough patch and they mature as a result of it.

Overprotective parents just focus on their child’s achievements, and not the child’s development. Kids are embarrassed when parents interfere in school about grades or inclusion in an activity. Parents, however, are obsessed with success, and are often misguided in their goals. In their anxiety, they take away all the discomforts, disappointments and even the fun out of growing up. Unfortunately, this kind of control can make the child go haywire when he or she is away at University, and could even end in alcoholism and drug abuse. Let children bloom at their own pace, and enjoy growing up, instead of overprotecting them.

Super Moms Secrets For Raising a Child With ADD

By Blair Critch

Cases of Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD, have been on the rise in recent years. Doctors are finally realizing that a true physical disability can be present in both children and adults in order to cause them to have a reduced attention span and increased hyperactivity. If you're raising a child with ADD, what are some things you can do to help him cope with this condition, to still get a proper education, to learn boundaries, and to keep you from pulling out your own hair? There are some things you can remember when raising a child with ADD that will help with all these issues.

First, it's important to have a proper diagnosis when raising a child with ADD. Just because your child is inattentive or has a tremendous amount of energy doesn't mean he necessarily has ADD. If your child can sit and play video games for half an hour, chances are he doesn't have true ADD. Make sure you get a diagnosis from a doctor rather than just assuming you know what your child has.

Setting boundaries is still important when raising a child with ADD. It's tempting to think that since your child has an illness then he should just be allowed to run amok, but this is a mistake. Everyone needs to learn self-discipline and control regardless of how difficult it might be, and this is true when raising a child with ADD. While those boundaries may be more lax than with other children - you have them sit and do homework for five minutes instead of 30, for instance - you still need boundaries nonetheless. Talk to your child openly and honestly about these expectations. Tell him he needs to sit still for another few minutes before he can go play or do anything else. Set boundaries on their free time as well; this too is vitally important when raising a child with ADD. They may resist some structured activities or having to sit still but they need to understand that despite how difficult it is, they need to sometimes buckle down and show some self-control.

Every parent wants their child to be properly educated and this is true when raising a child with ADD, even though this presents some special considerations. It helps to break up lessons in shorter bursts of time rather than expect your child to sit still through hours of the same lesson. Schooling also needs to be more absorbing for a child with ADD as he will have a hard time allowing himself to be caught up in the lessons. Using visual aids and hands-on materials is always helpful for any child but even more so when raising a child with ADD. Getting out of the classroom and taking field trips helps to keep them involved with the lessons and attentive.

And as for yourself, remember that your child has a situation that is difficult. It's never easy raising a child with ADD but you need to show that much more patience every single day. Resist the urge to blame him for his lack of attention and remind yourself of how difficult it must be for him as well. Give yourself frequent breaks; walk away and do something else for a few minutes if you feel yourself getting irritated or impatient. It might also be beneficial to ask for some help; remember that you can't do everything by yourself. Let your child have some free time to himself where he can learn and explore on his own rather than thinking you need to structure every minute of every day. And don't hesitate to ask your doctor for help when raising a child with ADD. While you might hesitate to use medication, he or she can offer some further suggestions as to dietary changes and changes to your schedule that can help. Since they are always learning new information about children with ADD every single day, you may find that you can get some additional help for raising a child with ADD that you never expected.

Parenting College Students: Mom and Dad's Excellent Adventure Dude!

By Dr. Debi Yohn

Parenting a college student is a skill built on understanding, adaptability and love. The most important component of course is love and respect. As a loving parent, you need to share mutual respect with your maturing young adult child.

We demonstrate respect by concentrating on what our children have to say, really listening to them and enjoying their company. Listening is an art form that many of us have abandoned, especially as parents. We listen to dribble from our friends but we often don't allow our children the same courtesy. Don't forget they like telling the stories, too, and you might learn something from just listening, instead of playing the hundred question game.

Your college student will love the attention, and will be more apt to want to spend time with you if they are relaxed and enjoying the conversation. A relationship is two sided. A relationship needs to be an enjoyable experience for both.

Parenting College Students - Less Instruction and Criticism, More Love and Camaraderie

As a parent of a college student, there is the tendency to worry about things such as binge drinking, late night parties and other potentially harmful behaviors. This is a real concern but it cannot be the subject of all conversations. The student will no longer hear your words.

I urge you to listen and choose different words than what you have been saying for years previous. They will not hear those same words they have heard time and time again. This is not particular to just college students. This is a rule in communication. If someone is not hearing you, choose different words. By this I mean different words and a different tone.

One of the main pitfalls that doom the parent-child relationship during the college years is the inability of parents to acknowledge what the student has achieved. This is due to parental concerns over their child's safety. Again, everyone responds better to positives. Don't forget to tell them everything they have done well over the past school year. Be sincere. This is not a good time for sarcasm. Kids have feelings and they have pride. You are best served to build on this.

In parenting college students, we would experience more success if we celebrated their successes and their interests. The student would want to share more time with the parent if they were not always in the "hot seat". Would you want to spend more time with someone who constantly criticized you? Of course, you wouldn't!

Parents should seize any opportunity to plan some activities to share with their college students, even if it is helping them with their laundry. Chances are good that your children want to spend more time with you if you demonstrate an appreciation of them and of their accomplishments. This really is a fun age. You are cheating yourself of an opportunity to enjoy this parenting experience if you do not take advantage of this.

Parenting College Students - Activities of Common Interest

So, what are some of these activities? Where can you start? First, parents need to show interest in the activities of their children and give them lots of opportunities to talk about what activities they are involved in and what they enjoy. Then, parents should visit the campus, particularly on occasions that are special to the student.

You might consider attending an athletic event on campus, or a concert featuring an artist of mutual interest. If your child has a particular activity that he or she enjoys, you should not hesitate to accommodate their interests. It is okay for you to expose yourself to something different. Haven't you expected them to do the same? This is what parents do! A parents' deeds will be remembered long after their words have faded. And you know what? The parent will have these memories, too.

Parenting college students, in an atmosphere of mutual respect and love, will set the ground work for a fantastic relationship in the future. Parents and their college age children begin to enjoy each other's company on a different level. Do not waste this opportunity. You will not regret it.

Parenting Forums

By James Gunaseelan

People are spending more and more time on the internet. Perhaps it is for work, or perhaps it is just for fun. However, the internet is also becoming a place where people can share endless amounts of information. Thus, it only stands to reason that parenting forums are becoming popular amongst parents.

So, the first question that one might ask is in reference to what a parenting forum actually is. There are literally hundreds of parenting forums on the internet. Some of these forums are about general topics, while others are about specific issues. The forums also might have certain audiences based on geographic location. You, as a parent, think it would be fun to exchange parenting ideas and stories, and thus you would like to create your own parenting forum. However, you are not too sure of how to begin. Well, the first thing that you must do is find a hosting site for your parenting forum.

There are a variety of different host websites for people who want to start their own forums. Some of these require a paid subscription to use the server, while other servers are free. You would probably do best to get a free server, since the only difference between a paid and free server is really the amount of code that is available for each post. The website server having been selected, you now can go about setting up the forum with the topics that you would like to discuss. Also, there are some forums that might give you the option of having a chat room too. You are going to have to decide if you want the forum to be read by everyone, or just the members.

It would probably be a good idea to make the forum public at first, and then private once you have reached the amount of members you would like to have. So, that leads you to the next step, and that is getting people to join your parenting forum. There are a variety of ways in which you can advertise your forum. First of all, you can go to free advertising sites and post the link to the forum. Also, there are a number of parenting blogs available that you can comment on about the forum. Lastly, you can go to other parenting message boards and mention your forum. However, be aware of spamming. If you advertise your forum too much on certain sites, you run the risk of being banned from those sites. Thus, it is a good idea to advertise on certain sites no more than once a week. It might take some time, but with perseverance you are sure to build an excellent forum!

Parenting College Students - Social Organizations Mold Leaders

By Dr. Debi Yohn

Parenting college students is as important as parenting our younger children. The influence of the parent can have a profound effect on their emerging adult. In parenting college students, Moms and Dads deal with power struggles and emotional volatility that are challenging. This is all part of the maturation process. There is also job uncertainty after graduation which escalates the college students' anxiety. Effective parenting reassures our children that their education is their best preparation for their future. Parents can also encourage their student to seek leadership opportunities.

Job recruiters search each year for college campus leaders. When parenting college students, parents need to stress the importance of social organizations, such as fraternities and sororities, as a way of developing leadership and responsibility traits. During the launching years, parental controls ease, and hopefully leadership begins to emerge.

Parents can share with their student that college is the practice ground where leadership qualities are honed. Social organizations are good for leadership development but also an excellent way for students to make friends and sharpen skills that will be useful later in life.

Parenting College Students - Leaders Emerge from Within Organizations

In discussions with their college student, parents should encourage their young adults to join social organizations like fraternities and sororities. Students network in these groups, and make contacts and endearing friendships that may last a lifetime. During the college years, emerging adults need to push their boundaries and discover who they are and discover their own wonderful attributes.

College Students may not realize the importance of taking a leadership position in a social organizations. In these organizations, the student will develop the leadership skills they will need to enter into the world with confidence after graduation. Moms and Dads can point out that skills such as learning to work with people of different cultures and diverse backgrounds will help them in the future.

A documented history of leadership adds to your student’s resume, and building a resume is an on-going task that should always be first and foremost. The goal is graduation. With graduation, there is independence.

Parenting College Students - Leaders of the Future

When parenting college students, a good correlation can be made between adults who as students held leadership positions in social organizations and the positions they hold in society today. These leadership lessons should be offered by parents in a spirit of support and encouragement.

Leadership is expected in these social organizations and the student learns by doing. The student may be an officer, have the responsibility for an event, or participate on a committee. Students learn budgeting, they learn how to run an effective meeting, and they learn how to participate in an effective meeting. The student often finds that they can speak in front of a group and motivate others. This is the type of experience you might not get in a classroom.

Even the famed film classic, "Animal House," recognized this connection. At movie's end, the last scene showed the positions that the fraternity leaders held in society some twenty years later. When parenting college students, parents can remind their students that leadership in college reminds employers that the applicants are more than just students.

Leadership emerges from within college social organizations, and our emerging adults will utilize this burgeoning talent in the real world upon graduation. In parenting college students on the importance and relevance of social organizational leadership, we are grooming the leaders of tomorrow right here and now!

Employment Success Starts at Home: Preparing Your College Student For a JOB

By Debi Yohn

When we parent well, everyone will reap grand rewards. The fruits of parenting college students will be harvested in the seasons that follow the college years, when the formal education is complete. While there is an ease of parental controls with college students, there continues to be a need for guidance that is as meaningful and as valuable as it has ever been.

Parents can help make their maturing young adult children more employable by teaching them core values, such as responsibility, accountability, independence, and respect for others. These values will make them a more attractive hire for prospective employers in their future. Their parents are their role models and teachers.

It is a good idea to encourage your children to practice their social skills with adult family members and friends. At home, where they feel safe, is a great time to practice adult social skills. Learning to communicate well with adults and hold a conversation will pay off later. I encourage parents to expose their children to adults and expect them to behave appropriately. These interpersonal relationships can be building blocks. It also builds self confidence. Later this confidence will reflect in reduced anxiety during job interviews and new situations with people they do not know.

Confidence reflects in future relationships. Internships, community activities and volunteer situations are additional ways of enhancing relationship experiences. Your maturing child may also discover some great people outside their normal circle.

Parenting College Students - Making Them Independent

Some students need their parents' encouragement to be more independent during the high school years. Parents can teach their children independence by expecting their youngsters to be responsible for themselves. This process begins in the early teenage years. It results in the transformation of children from being completely reliant in preschool to relatively independent young men and women by the time they are off to college. This is a good thing. When you do your job right, your children will leave home.

Parenting college students becomes an easier task if the students have been given responsibilities. Daily living skills and financial responsibility are key. Prospective college students should be taught to do their own wash, to prepare simple meals, to clean their own room space and to budget money while living at home. They can learn from their mistakes while they have a safety net around them. When they are on their own, they are secure in knowing they have daily living skills.

Having a daily routine is extremely important with college students. When they have a routine, getting up and going to work every day is not so shocking. Going to classes every day is one kind of routine but getting up and going to a job every day is a different experience.

Parenting College Students - Communication is a Key to Employment Success

Good communication skills are essential. The goal of a graduate is to be employable and to find a job they enjoy. After practicing proper communication with adults at home, speaking with advisers and professors in school, interviewing will not be so daunting. A graduate will need to shine above all the other applicants when it is time to apply for jobs. A confident graduate will be able to sell themselves. An employer is looking for skills but they are also looking for the right personality.

A child learns all kinds of skills in the family. They learn the core value of respect for others. They learn kindness. These skills will be reflected in the employment interviews and later in the day-to-day interactions with their supervisors and their peers.

When communicating with adults, good body language is essential. Some practical suggestions are: maintaining good eye contact during a conversation; having a firm hand shake is important for both boys and girls again keeping good eye contact; having slow clear speech in an audible tone shows confidence.

A child learns these skills at home and by observing others. Expose your child to situations where they can both practice these skills and observe these skills. In a non critical way, you might speak to your student in private and have them practice certain situations that will benefit them later. Make it fun and light. Also remember to comment when you see them practicing what they have learned.

The life skills you teach are invaluable. These skills will help your student to build their resume. Expose your children to different situations and different kinds of people. Help them grow as a person.

These are some simple steps to help your young adult child become more employable. Parenting skills with the goal of increasing their social skills is a tried and true winning strategy for future job success!

Classes For Parenting

By James Gunaseelan

Teenagers can be so very difficult to handle that you need to all your parenting skills to understand and adjust to the changes that your child is going through. According to experts, even if you have always been very close to you son or daughter when he or she was younger, you will tend to lose the attention of your kid when he or she reaches puberty. Instead of tearing your hair out and screaming at your teenager, learn to be more flexible and understanding. To help you understand your teenager better, it would be a good idea for you to attend some parenting classes and learn a few things about raising teenagers. There are many organizations that offer parenting classes all over the country. The good thing about attending parenting classes is that you get to meet other parents and share your experiences with them.

There are many types of parenting classes being offered by different organizations all over the country. To help you decide which type of parenting classes will help you deal with your kids, you need to assess your situation first and then take a close look into the modules offered in these parenting classes. When assessing your present parenting needs, you need to take a closer look into your relationship with your children. Make no mistakes about it, parenting classes are not only for parents who are having problems with their kids. Moreover, parenting classes are not for those who have been labeled as bad parents. Always remember that having disagreements with your kids every now and then does not mean that you are a bad parent. Arguments are normal between parents and their children so do not be depressed if you and your kids disagree on a lot of things.

Choosing the right parenting classes is very crucial. Focus on your needs when choosing parenting classes. For instance, if you are having a lot of problems when it comes to dealing with your teenagers, it would be best for you to enroll in one of those parenting classes that deal with communication and conflict management. Learning the art of communication and negotiations is very important when dealing with teenagers. Note that saying no to your teenagers will only incite them to do something that is really against your wishes so you need to find a way to deal with the situation without causing too much friction between you and your kid.

What's Her Type? Keys To Understanding Your Child

By Dede Perkins

"Let us beware and beware and beware…of having an ideal for our children. So doing, we damn them." D.H. Lawrence

So begins the parenting chapter of David Keirsey's Please Understand Me, II. Although "typing" personalities began in the days of Plato, nearly 2400 years ago, most of us have not been given the tools to understand one another.

When I was a child and was hurt or confused by a friend's behavior, my mother and grandmother would say "Everyone's crazy but me and thee. And sometime I wonder about thee." We'd shrug and laugh and that would be that. Knowing I wasn't the only one to be confused by people's behavior always made me feel better.

Realizing we are different, however, I wondered why are we expected to act the same? Why are introverts encouraged to relax and enjoy the party? Why are energetic children told to sit still and behave? Why are dreamers often pulled back to earth?

Would we be better off if we celebrated each other's differences instead of trying to change them?

In Please Understand Me, II, David Keirsey argues yes. As he writes on page one, "…people are different from each other, and [that] no amount of getting after them is going to change them. Nor is there any reason to change them, because the differences are probably good."

So instead of worrying that your child doesn't sit still or sits still too much, that she dreams too much or dreams too little, that she's too outgoing or not outgoing enough, relax. Instead, try to understand her true nature and parent accordingly.

Kiersey writes, "…overseeing Mother Nature's project, maturation, requires parents to become child watchers, not child shapers, acting only when they detect a teachable moment or opportunity to encourage the growth of some attitude or action that is consistent with the child's temperament…Parents must be able to answer the question, 'What kind of person is my child, and what can I do to help him or her grow in that direction?'"

So take a moment and think about your child. Does she thrive on physical action? Does she jump on her bike and race around the neighborhood? Dive elbow deep into finger paints? Play her guitar day after day after day, just to get it right? If so, according to Keirsey, she's probably an "Artisan" like Amelia Earhart or Barbra Streisand.

"These children shine in action…The entire range of fine and practical arts, and of competitive games and sports, will grab budding Artisans - they need physical movement and novelty, and they love contests," Keirsey writes.

If your child loves stories, prefers make-believe over physical play, is sensitive and concerned about others, Keirsey calls her an "Idealist" like Eleanor Roosevelt or Margaret Mead.

Idealists "seem to have a natural talent for relating intimately with others, or for what I have called "diplomatic empathy," he writes.

Is your child helpful, eager to understand and follow rules, unsettled by change? Is she the traditional "good little girl?" Perhaps she's a "Guardian" like Elizabeth II or Mother Teresa.

Keirsey writes "Guardian self respect seems to be enhanced when they are serving others. Even as young as five, Guardians can be seem doing good deeds, not only for their parents and teachers, but also for their siblings and friends."

Finally, is your child a collector of shells, rocks, butterflies, stamps? Does she love to push buttons, take things apart and reassemble them, master a computer game? Does she ask endless "why" questions, seeking to understand the way things work? If so, Keirsey calls her a "Rational" like Margaret Thatcher or Marie Curie.

"More than anything else, Rational children wish to learn how things work. They start their logistical investigations early and continue them throughout life," he writes.

After you consider your child's temperament, ask yourself, is she an introvert or an extrovert? Is she a "fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants" type kid or one who prefers knowing what her day will bring?

Finally, which of the four temperaments best describes you? Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Do you prefer an orderly, well-planned day or an open and flexible day? Understanding your own personality may illuminate how you perceive your child's strengths and weaknesses and how they affect you.

In short, understanding personality and temperament can make you a better parent.

To read more about personality and temperament and/or take his online personality sorter, check out Keirsey's web site at http:keirsey.com. Chances are, you'll be glad you did.

Essentials For Parenting Healthy Children

By James Gunaseelan

It is every parent’s wish that his or her children are healthy, both physically and mentally. Education of parents is vital to guide them to parent healthy children. This is the only way they will recognize when their children are not healthy. Nowadays, with the popularity of convenience and fast food, good nutrition is often a loser. It is important that parents are aware that parenting healthy children means seeing that they eat the right food in the right amounts. Lack of proper food at a young age can lead to poor growth, improper development, and sickly children. Parenting healthy children means ensuring that they get sufficient proteins and carbohydrates, as well as vitamins and minerals in their diet. They should be encouraged to drink milk and eat fresh fruit and vegetables daily. From a young age, children should be encouraged to study labels on food so they can recognize which food is healthy and which is not.

Parenting healthy children means ensuring they get plenty of fresh air and exercise. Children nowadays spend most of their leisure time indoors, in front of the television or computer. They should be encouraged to play games out doors and participate in neighborhood activities. Parents should lead by example, and eat healthy food and exercise regularly too.

Parents should spend quality time with their children. The entire family should go out on bicycling trips or camping holidays. This ensures close bonding and parents can easily find out if something is bothering any of the kids. Anything taken to an extreme by parents can have an adverse effect on their kids, particularly on teenagers and adolescents. Parenting healthy children does not mean that the parents have to be obsessive about their children. Rather, common sense should rule in most cases. Obsessive parents can make children neurotic. Parents should also not be over critical of their children. This leads to low self-esteem and can bring about other psychological disorders. Nagging children about food or exercise will not help in the long run. It may boomerang and lead to eating disorders like binge eating or bulimia. Always lead by example, and encourage children to learn for themselves, the joys of a healthy lifestyle. Parents who smoke should consider quitting when their children are born or are very young. Children of parents who do not smoke or drink excessively are less likely to smoke or drink in excess.

Wrong Crowd?

By Dede Perkins

"Hey, Mom!" Your fourteen-year old daughter greets you as she walks to the car. Your eyes bulge at the blue eye shadow and black liner smudged around her eyes.

Your daughter turns and waves to a made-up girl in a tight shirt and ripped jeans standing on the sidewalk. The girl waves back and saunters away, hips swinging from side to side.

"Who's your friend?" you manage to ask.

"Oh, no one," she replies.

Sooner or later, our daughter will buddy up with a peer whose values and upbringing do not match our own. We must fight our instincts to lock her in her room until the danger passes.

"Most experts agree that a friendship with a less-than-stellar kid is unlikely to have any lingering effect on your child, if you handle the situation with care," says Sue Woodman in her Parenting article, "What To Do When You Don't Like Your Child's Friends."

Research shows that well-adjusted children are rarely hurt by friendships with their wayward peers. It appears that well-grounded values and kindness rub off quicker than dysfunction and meanness.

Many children choose friends who complement them. A shy girl befriends the class clown. A fearful child befriends the daredevil. They do so because they get something out of the relationship. As needs change, often, so do friendships.

Nonetheless, as parents, we worry. We worry that another's values will rub off on our children. We worry that our daughter will make poor decisions in the face of temptation. We worry we'll lose the daughter we know and love.

If we forbid the friendship, we set up a dilemma for our child. Desire to follow the rules conflicts with the desire to explore "otherness." Nearly always, the child will choose her own needs and will continue seeing the forbidden friend at school or social events. For some, the adolescent's desire for autonomy makes the forbidden friendship all the more attractive.

According to Larry Dumont, MD, an adolescent psychiatrist at KidsPeace National Hospital for Kids in Crisis, most kids try on many different identities before finding one that fits.

"It's a rite of passage, a sign of their becoming their own person," says Dumont. "Finding their identity and discovering their place in the world - these are the major challenges of the teenage years."

If your daughter befriends a peer whose behavior worries you, Dumont suggests asking three questions:

• What purpose does this friendship or group serve in your daughter's life?

• How does this friendship enhance her self-image?

• If you take your daughter out of the group, what substitute activity or person can meet her needs?

"Kids have always been involved in groups. This is to be expected and can be a very beneficial activity for teenagers. Don't jump to conclusions about new friends or strange clothes. These may be just the proverbial 'phase' they're going through."

The one exception is if your child takes up with a gang.

"Groups often take on characteristics of their own. People who would never dream of certain behavior on their own or with one or two others seem to become immune to the cries of inner conscience when they are part of a large group," says Eda LeShan in When Your Child Drives You Crazy.

"Restrictions and punishments are surely no answer, however. Such methods tend to push a child into the welcome embrace of those who won't sit in judgement upon him. The most important antidote is free and honest discussion of the temptations and the dangers," says LeShan.

But how do we talk so our daughter will listen? Show faith in her judgement. State our concerns rather than our values say the experts.

Ellen Rosenberg, in her book, Get A Clue!, suggests the following:

Say, "I know she means a lot to you, but:

• here's what concerns me…"

• here's how I see you change when you’re with her…"

• here's how I see you treat your sister when she's around…"

• here's what scares me…"

Say, "While I appreciate that continuing this friendship is your decision:

• I hope you'll be strong about what you let yourself do."

• I hope you'll at least think about this."

• I'm worried about her influence."

Even though we don't like it, there comes a time when we can't control every situation our daughter encounters. In those situations, we hope she will hear our voice, feel our love, and make the mature choice. If we've talked openly through the years, chances are she'll have the insight and strength to make the right decision.

Parenting College Students - Turning Internships Into Job Success

By Dr. Debi Yohn

Parenting college students during their college years should include encouraging internships. The college years are a once-in-a-lifetime experience for emerging adults. Moms and Dads serve as good advisors when they encourage their students to seek out internships in fields of their interest.

College internships are generally summer employment opportunities that offer job exposure in a particular field of interest, giving college students an introduction to important people who may, in the future, become valuable contacts. It is important that parents remind their students that contacts have contacts. Every contact may know someone else who will be able to provide the student with subsequent employment opportunities.

Parents should stress the importance of having a job experience. Their student will gain experience while making valuable contacts through college internships. Job mentors can also provide references that will be needed when the student is seeking a job after graduation. Always be building your resume. Great advise to college students.

Parenting College Students - Assess the Profession

Maturing young adults learn about themselves and about life through out their college experience. Summer jobs provide the job exposure necessary to assess the profession of their choice. College internships can also be experiences through which students determine whether they enjoy a particular job experience sufficiently to make it a career.

A winning strategy for success suggests that college students should be encouraged to seek internships. This experience may open their eyes to experiences they otherwise would never have considered.

Parents should encourage their student to push through their discomfort and "Try it, you might like it." Actually the student may be very surprised. When a student is being productive, the parent's tendency to worry about binge drinking, late night partying, and other potentially harmful behaviors is reduced. Through the internship process young adults have an opportunity to develop both financial and time management skills. This is a real life experience that cannot be learned in a classroom.

Parenting College Students - Heartfelt Advice

Encouraging college students to have real life experiences puts them on the right path for life. The value of internships is a strategy for a lifetime of professional success. College internships can be an opportunity for students to have a foundation for their adult working careers.

Mentors familiarize the intern with the mechanics of a profession, and then they can help groom the young adults for success in their chosen field. The parents provide encouragement and support needed for adult children to perform at an optimum level. The best part of an internship is it can place a student in a favorable position for hire upon graduation.

Post graduation, a potential employer needs to know that a graduate has the potential to be a good employee. The employer needs to assess whether the graduate can be successful in a work environment. Can they get along with others? If there is no work history and no internship, the potential employer has nothing that tells them this applicant can come to work every day. A graduate with a 4.0 grade point average but no work history may lose out getting hired to a graduate with a 3.0 grade point average with a work/internship history.

Internships often turn into a major job success for graduates. Additionally, it decreases the anxiety that often accompanies the hunt for employment upon graduation. It is a "Win-Win" situation. The new graduate has immediate employment and the employer gets an employee that will quickly adapt to the work environment.

Parenting Styles

By James Gunaseelan

While childhood gurus and baby experts would like you to believe that there are several parenting styles, they really fall into two very simple categories. The two most common parenting styles are casual and scheduled. Out of these two styles, come the parenting styles whose names you might be more familiar with, such as “Cry It Out” or “Attachment Parenting”.

People that embrace casual parenting styles tend to be more “go with the flow” kind of people. Casual parenting is more about letting the family revolve around the child. In this style, the child is given a lot of freedom to make decisions in his or her life. This freedom can start from the moment that the baby comes home from the hospital if the child is demand fed or allowed to sleep and wake on a self set schedule. This style also tends to embrace things like the family bed and sling wearing, which allows the child to stay constantly with the mother. Casual parenting lets children mature at their own pace and tends to allow kids to have a lot more control of what happens in their day to day life.

Parents that practice a more scheduled way of raising their children tend to be people that feel the child has joined into their existing family and therefore must adapt to the way the family chooses to do things. Scheduled parenting includes having a regimented sleep and feeding schedule, keeping a regular bedtime and giving the child choices within limits set by the parents. This style tends to embrace methods such as “cry it out” and timely feedings as opposed to feeding on demand. Scheduled parenting tends to manage a child’s time, limiting the amount of choice that a child has until he or she is old enough to fully understand how to make good decisions.

Many parents find that they naturally adapt their parenting style to their personality. Some may find that they draw from both ends of the spectrum when it comes to deciding how to raise their child. They may take a more casual approach to sleep issues but a more schedule approach to feeding. When it comes to deciding what type of parenting style you are most comfortable with, you need to remember that only you can decide which style is right for your children. Neither of these parenting styles are the best overall, but one of them is best for your family. It is up to you to discover which one that is.

Tips For Parenting Twins

By James Gunaseelan

Parenting twins can be a lot of hard work and a lot of fun too. Twins naturally seem to attract more attention than single babies, and outings with them can increase their parents’ socializing to a great extent. Young parents living on their own may find the physical work and the expenses involved in caring for two infants simultaneously quite daunting, particularly if they have no help. Twins often need to be fed together and just cleaning them and putting them to sleep seems like a never-ending cycle. It is tough to decide which is worse - if they are hollering together, or if one wakes just as the other falls asleep. Parenting twins is no cakewalk!

As the babies grow older, parents realize there are plenty of advantages in parenting twins. Twins usually are wonderful companions to each other, and it is a sheer joy watching them play together from a very young age. The fact that they have company all the time often makes them ahead of children their age in play school. This does not mean they do not fight, or that they want to be together at all times – twins need their individual spaces too.

It is very easy to treat twins as a package deal, and keep them together at all times. The first tip for parenting twins is to treat them as individuals. They each have their likes and dislikes, as well as skills and failings. It is unfair to shout at them together, or treat them as one person with no individual preferences.

Another important factor to bear in mind, while parenting twins is never to compare them with each other. Their progress from infancy will be at each one’s own pace, and their talents and skills may differ. Parents of twins tend to get anxious when one does not keep pace with the other, but it is important to remember that they are two individuals. Twins are usually considered to be inseparable, and activities are often planned for both of them together, particularly if they are of the same sex. However, they should be encouraged to make other friends. Each of them must be allowed to develop friendships and activities that do not necessarily include the other.Parenting twins is a wonderful experience and though it may be hard work, parents should enjoy the double benefits they bring to their life.

Parenting College Students - Mutual Activities That Won't Embarrass Your Student

By Dr. Debi Yohn

In parenting college students during their launching years (generally the first two years in college), parents want to stay connected with their emerging adults while respecting their need for independence and privacy. Parents are often in a quandary about staying involved in the lives of their children but not overstepping the parents’ welcome into their students’ lives.

Parents also make the mistake of over focusing their attention on activities that are harmful to their maturing young adult children, such as binge drinking and late night parties. This type of instructional dialogue will only fray the parent-child relationship, and further exacerbate the parental tendency to worry. The college student will turn a deaf ear if they have heard these same words over and over. So save them.

In parenting college students, we need to be supportive of the students’ efforts, celebratory of their successes and proud of their accomplishments. Parents can converse with their children concerning which activities they would like to share with their parents. Actually, listening is probably the best way to communicate. Let them do the talking, especially if you do not throw in conversation stoppers, like, "You didn't do that, did you?" No lectures when they are telling you a funny story. Take mental notes. This is the time to listen.

Parenting College Students - Peer Pressure is Acute

Peer pressure is particularly worrisome for parents when it comes to negative behaviors, such as drinking and drugs. There is a high incidence of drug and alcohol related crimes. Parents want to practice effective parenting techniques by staying a viable part of their children's lives. Parents need to remain available. Believe it or not, college campus's have better crime rates than the world at large. Crime has increased on campus though and college students need to be reminded to be safe.

When parents visit their student it is important to find mutual activities on campus that won't embarrass them. Moms and Dads must remember how it was when they were in their launching years. During these times, students are filled with anxieties combined with emotional volatility and mental health issues.

Kids are easily embarrassed. They question being seen by their peers with their parents. This isn't always true, some kids are very proud that their parents visited them. It's fun to tell your students your own stories and how you felt when you parents came to campus. There are some activities that parents and their students can share, just ask them what they want to do. Your student will appreciate your allowing them to guide the activities.

Parenting College Students - Some Mutual Campus Activities

Your student will probably have some suggestions. You might talk to them before you arrive and have them plan the schedule. There may be a restaurant they want to go to (since you will be paying) or there may be something happening on campus. Athletic events, concerts, art shows and musical programs are some of the activities that may be of mutual interest. Just let them take the lead. If there is a place you are interested in, you might suggest it or do it on your own.

Parents can enjoy walking around the campus. Perhaps your student can give you the tour or you can simply pick out a comfortable bench on the quad and people watch for awhile. Share a nice dinner together in a restaurant that is comfortable for both you and your student. Most students appreciate a good meal. Try and let your student recommend the dinner site. There are so many ways for parents to share fun activities with their student. It is not a bad idea to go off on your own at times and allow your student to stay on their routine. Remember, they will not always be this sensitive. They are trying to figure all this out so be patient.

When you are making plans, always be sure to obtain and to value your child’s input. Your relationship with them has shifted. You are on their ground. It is like they are showing you their new home. Keep it pleasant so you can enjoy many visits while they are in college.

Campuses are fun. There is so much good energy. The library is a great place to visit and don't forget to go to the bookstore. This is a great place for souvenirs.

By parenting college students in an environment of mutual love, understanding, and respect, both parties will find activities that they can share. Parent and students alike will eagerly anticipate the parents’ visits to campus. These are bitter sweet years, your young adult is about to earn their wings.

Parenting Strategies For Step Parents

By James Gunaseelan

Step parenting is rarely easy and a new stepparent has to show a lot of patience, tolerance and warmth. The first time you meet the children of your new partner may be awkward all around, so just be yourself. Be secure in the fact that your partner loves you and will stand by you. The death of a parent or parent’s divorce is always hard on children, irrespective of their ages. No parenting strategies for stepparents can prepare you entirely for the children’s reaction to a new person in their parent’s life, but losing your cool never helps. Let your warmth and interest in their activities be apparent and just be your natural, pleasant self. Parenting strategies for stepparents may differ, depending on whether the children live with you, whether their other parent is around, and how old the kids are. It also depends on whether you have your own biological children, and where they live. Most of all, it depends on what you and your partner decide is best. There are no rules as to how involved you need to get with the children, but if they live with you naturally you may have the responsibility of supervising their daily routine. Accept that there is likely to be resentment and that children may see you as an intruder. Whatever parenting strategies for stepparents you use, try and make the transition as easy as possible for the children. They are parts of lives shared with your partner before you came on the scene. You cannot be a part of that past, but you need not be someone they see as changing the way their life used to be. Be patient with them and pay attention to their needs. Your thoughtfulness will win them over in time.

Your stepchildren may welcome you or be hostile towards you, but ultimately living in the same house calls for some ground rules. You and your partner need to discuss the role you will play in the children’s lives, and then the entire family has to talk about his together. Parenting strategies for stepparents have to be based on openness and fair play. As adults, you and your partner have to guide the kids and be tolerant with them. This does not mean that they should not be disciplined, but they should not lose trust in their parents.

It is best if the disciplining is initially left to the biological parent. Your role in the family should also be clearly spelt out from the start. Once you have grown more familiar with the household you can ask the kids to help you with some chores. Do not tolerate rudeness, but do not lose your dignity in the process of admonishing them. One of the best parenting strategies for stepparents is to befriend the children on their terms. Try and spend time with them alone; slowly a relationship will grow between you. Let them also have time alone with your partner. Take time to make things easy for them to stay in touch with their other parent. They will realize that you respect all these relationships.
