Credit Cards: Still The Safest Form Of Online Payment

By Kenneth Wade

Contrary to popular belief, credit cards are still the safest form of payment for goods and services on or offline. Many consumers fear unauthorized charges and billing errors. In many cases, these problems can all be solved just by knowing your rights and using them to your advantage.

When it comes to unauthorized charges, there are many consumer defenses available. The credit card companies, as well as the government are very aware of identity theft and the recent rise so it has become increasingly easier to report fraudulent charges. Now if your card is used without your permission, you can only be held liable for up to $50 per card. Compare that to if your wallet or purse is stolen and how much you would get back from cash lost in that case. Plus If you report the loss before the card is used, you can't be held responsible for any unauthorized charges. Most good issuers have a 24 hour number where they can be accessed nowadays but it is always a good idea to follow the phone call up with a letter for documented proof and you will be fine. Also if u just have a dispute with a merchant or service provider, it can be handled in the same way as long as they are within 100 miles and the charge is above $50. (These limitations don't apply if the seller is also the card issuer or if a special business relationship exists between the seller and the card issuer, or if you've already made several attempts to resolve the dispute on your own).

Aside from that, some people are afraid of billing errors. While I am fully aware that billing errors do occur,I also know that issuers have a set of rules they have to follow to promptly correct them. These rules are outlined on statements sent out once a year. Many issuers even list your rights on the bill. If you find a mistake on your bill, you can dispute the charge and withhold payment on that amount while the charge is being investigated. The error might be a charge for the wrong amount, for something you didn't accept, or for an item that wasn't delivered as agreed. Of course, you still have to pay any part of the bill that's not in dispute, including finance and other charges.

Some other tips are pretty simple to follow. 1. Never respond to credit card e-mails asking for your details, even if they look official. 2.Always make sure the merchant only charges you once at the time of the transaction. The sooner the better. 3. Don't enter your credit card into an unsecured website. Make sure the address says "https" instead of "http". The website should also have a certification of some kind, usually verisign.

So to sum it all up, credit cards are safer than ever and will always be safer than cash in my opinion. I've included a link to a list of good, safe low interest credit cards. Feel free to look over them and compare rewards.

Legitimate Work at Home Jobs - Earn Money Without Going Bankrupt!

By Jeff Casmer

One of the best ways to solidify yourself as a legitimate work at home job is to offer your prospects a guarantee. You establish credibility as well as ease their mind when it comes to following through on their purchase. But most people are reluctant to offer guarantees and I don't blame them.

Assuming all risks is great for prospects, but what if all your customers ask for their money back? You can kiss your business goodbye thats what.

How do you establish yourself as a legitimate work at home job by offering a guarantee without putting your business in jeopardy? Consider the following:

It helps to know that a good portion of people don't call in guarantees. They figure you've put yourself on the line, so by making this purchase or signing up for this offer they've joined your team.

No one wants to admit to making a mistake, especially when they consider themselves a team player, thus something has to go terribly wrong before people will call in a guarantee.

However, hanging onto this bit of information wont help to establish your legitimate work at home job because at some point someone is going to call in the guarantee.

Understanding the types of guarantees available will help to minimize the damage on your business.

Unconditional guarantee: An unconditional guarantee means that the prospect can ask for a refund for any reason. These types of guarantees should only be applied to products.

Unconditional guarantees work for physical products such as books because you assume little risk. For starters you merely shipped the product out. Even if you created it, once the product is in the hands of the customer, they now assume responsibility on whether or not it works.

Because they have to be the one to use the product, they are ones who can decide whether or not it worked. You are still operating a legitimate work at home job because no matter what you have to follow through on your guarantee but because many people feel more confident purchasing products from sites that offer an unconditional guarantee you also establish creditability without losing too much money, as most people will not pay the postage fee to send the product back.

Conditional guarantee: A conditional guarantee means that if the customer does not follow through on their half of the deal they will not see results, thus its not your fault if their unsuccessful.

These types of guarantees should be applied to situations where your presence or impute is required such as classes or one-on-one situations. Those who operate a work at home job where they supply a service should consider this type of guarantee.

In order for you to operate a legitimate work at home job with this guarantee and not get busted for fraud you have to clearly state when someone wouldn't get the guarantee.

For instance, if they miss 4 classes their guarantee is no longer applicable, or perhaps if you can prove that they sabotaged their own success.

Second you must get the prospect to read the guarantee. This means it must be in a location the person can see and it must be written in a way that will entice them to read it. For instance instead of say 100% money back guarantee, you can say 89% money back guarantee. Your prospects will wonder what that means and read your claim.

Offering a legitimate work at home guarantee is one of the best ways to gain credibility and, as a result, more sales.

Legitimate Telecommute Jobs: How to Find Them

By Wendy Betterini

Finding legitimate telecommute jobs can be challenging because there are so many scams and misleading opportunities that come up when you use traditional "work at home" search terms. This article will share some alternate ways to hunt down the REAL telecommute jobs.

Before we get to those, first take a minute to put yourself in the mind-set of an employer who wants to hire people to work at home. Mr. Telecommute Employer may be eager to find good candidates, but would he be so eager that he would fill his advertisement with promises of great riches for little work? Would he offer you an "easy job" that pays thousands of dollars a week? Would he try to entice you to work for him by claiming you can work in your underwear? (I know it sounds funny, but have you SEEN some of the supposed "job ads" out there on the internet? :-)

Obviously, a real telecommuting employer would be more focused on finding candidates that have the skills his company is looking for, and offering them a salary that matches the complexity of work involved with the job.

Okay - so that is one obstacle out of the way, avoid ads that sound like they are trying to convince you that you will get rich doing the easiest job ever.

Now, would Mr. Telecommute Employer also be so excited about his job opportunity that he would load the ad with exclamation points, dollar signs and other miscellaneous punctuation marks? ** Work at home!! Great pay, easy work $$$$$$$!!!!!!!!! ** Probably not.

Okay - another sign of an illegitimate telecommute job, avoid ads that use excessive punctuation.

Finally, would Mr. Telecommute Employer be so determined to find the right candidates that he would try to charge them money to work for him? Have you ever applied for a job in the real world and had the employer ask you for money? Definitely NOT.

Okay - so there's another big sign of a scam, asking for money to work for them.

There are other warning signs of telecommuting scams, but those are three big ones that you'll see most often during your job search.

Now you know what to avoid, but how do you go about FINDING the legitimate telecommute jobs?

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, it's all about the search terms you use online. If you search for "work at home jobs" you will undoubtedly get tons of ads just like the ones I've described. In other words, not real jobs.

But let's go back to the mind of Mr. Telecommute Employer for a moment and ask ourselves, "What would he put in the ad to get the attention of potential telecommuters?"

Most likely he would include phrases like, "work remotely, telecommuting possible, partial telecommute considered, home office requirements, must be able to work independently," and so on.

Try searching on phrases like that and you should get many more legitimate job results than just searching on "work at home jobs".

Top 10 Work at Home Jobs

By Wendy Betterini

Work at home jobs are becoming more and more popular, but there are still some that can be done more easily in a home environment. This article shares 10 of the most common types of work at home jobs you will find online.

1) Customer Service

Thanks to the internet and software programs that allow you to log in to a company's system from home, it is easy for employers to hire remote customer service agents. Imagine sitting in your home office, answering telephone calls from people all over the world. That is a reality for many thousands of home-workers today! The duties that come along with customer service positions vary from company to company, but most often you would be answering customer phone calls, providing general customer service, addressing complaints, entering orders into the company computer system online, and so on.

Requirements: Most companies would require you to have an updated home office environment with computer, telephone, headset, and fax machine, though this will vary depending on the job duties.

2) Telemarketing

Telemarketing is another job that can easily be done from home. Most often this involves making cold calls to sales leads and either selling merchandise or services directly, or sometimes you would be simply setting appointments for sales people to close the sale.

Requirements: Most of these jobs would require an unlimited phone plan so you could make long distance calls without extra charges, but some companies do have a program where you could log into their system online and make the calls over a broadband connection. Some of these jobs do require sales or telemarketing experience, but some are willing to train.

3) Transcription

Transcription is done by listening to audio files and typing them into written form. There are two basic types of transcription jobs: medical and general. Medical transcription requires more intensive training so you will know the medical terminology used on the recordings, which are often created by doctors and other health professionals. General transcription can include many different types of audio recordings, such as meeting notes, seminars, teleseminars, and interviews.

Requirements: Transcription jobs will usually require equipment like software programs that can play the audio files at various speeds, and sometimes a specialized foot pedal is also required to control the software. You may also need a special headset.

4) Web Design

Web design jobs are great options for working at home. You can either work as an employee for a company, or as a freelancer who hires out your skills to many different clients. These jobs would obviously require that you have knowledge of web design, HTML, CSS, PHP, and other computer languages.

Requirements: The only equipment requirements for web design work at home jobs would be the software you need to create, design and update web pages. Some companies might require you to use a specific program like Dreamweaver, but others might not.

5) Writing

Writing is a great option for working at home too. You could either work for one company exclusively or freelance for many clients. This job also offers great flexibility with the types of writing and publications you can choose from. You could write for print markets like magazines, or focus on online publications by writing for e-newsletters and e-zines. Writers are needed for many different types of materials, such as sales brochures, technical manuals, parenting publications, health websites - you can even be a "ghostwriter" for people who want to publish their own books but don't have strong writing skills! Writers can also create their own income by writing and selling e-books online, creating content websites funded by advertising, affiliate products and more. Basically, if you have strong writing skills, there are endless ways to turn them into a paying venture.

Requirements: Even better, the only requirements for working at home as a writer would be having the skills and motivation to do it. It may be helpful to have at least the basic software programs that most clients would use, such as Microsoft Word.

6) Graphic Design

Just like web design, graphics design can be done from home too. This would involve the creation of digital images like artwork, company logos and web site graphics. Graphic designers can also work with print images, but that would more likely be done for a local company, even if you could still work at home much of the time.

Requirements: Once again, software programs for graphic design would be needed, as well as proper training.

7) Sales

Sales jobs can be done from home by telephone or internet, but some may also require daily visits to prospective clients. Some sales jobs would pay commission-only (you would only get paid if you make sales), but some do offer a base salary plus commission.

Requirements: This will vary depending on the company and type of sales job, but most often you would need to have some sales experience, and a home office with computer, telephone and fax machine.

8) Virtual Assisting

Virtual assisting is becoming one of the more popular work at home jobs these days. Most often these jobs require basic clerical skills like knowing how to use a computer, the internet, telephone, email, word processing programs like Microsoft Word, as well as spreadsheets, perhaps accounting software, and other basic office equipment. A virtual assistant can work solely for one employer, or be a freelance independent contractor. The duties of a virtual assistant would most often involve answering telephones, doing clerical work, answering email inquiries from clients, sending mailings, making travel arrangements, and more. (It varies greatly depending on the employer.)

Requirements: Usually you would need an updated computer system, telephone, fax machine, and the right software programs that your employer would use.

9) Teaching/Tutoring

Teaching and tutoring jobs can also easily be done from home, and they can apply to different settings. For example, you could tutor children who need help with their studies, or teach English as a second language to adults. You could work independently on your own, or sign on with a company who will connect you with clients.

Requirements: Besides specialized knowledge and teaching credentials, very little equipment is needed for this kind of work at home job.

10) Consulting

If you have specialized knowledge in specific areas, you may be able to create a lucrative consulting practice from home. There are consultants for pretty much everything, from legal to medical to business to personal life coaching! Consider your areas of expertise and ask yourself if people would be willing to pay money to learn from you. More often consulting is done on an independent basis rather than working specifically for one company.

Requirements: Depending on the type of consulting you would be doing, you may need a full home office setup as well as other equipment or software programs related to your line of work.

There are many other types of jobs that can be done from home, but these are probably the most common. However, as technology continues to advance we will likely see more and more opportunities to do even more jobs from home in the future.

Evolution of Recruitment

By James Davey

With today's current economic climate, recruitment agencies have to look at their current methods to see if they are keeping up to date with the markets needs. It's all well having some of the best consultants, resources and reputation behind you but without knowing the market properly they are all useless. When many of us started in recruitment things were very different. Let's look at how from the two main perspectives:

1.Business Development- This side of recruitment has changed dramatically. We all remember starting a new recruitment role with a cold desk, no leads, maybe a database if you're lucky. Now I'm not saying that it is no longer a numbers game, because it clearly still plays an important part but far more research must now be done by a consultant. Gone are the days where you would cold call organisations, at times guessing people's names.

Research through professional networking sites, social websites, word of mouth, referrals are now essential in developing business and more importantly gaining knowledge. With the evolution of the web, far more information is available on anyone in the professional world. Now let's say you have the appropriate information, the target company, the name of the appropriate manager and you're ready to call, what are you going to say? Far too many agencies claim to be vertical market specialists when they are not.

This does not mean that your company has to focus all of its efforts on one specific market, but the consultant must have some genuine knowledge of that market from both the client and candidate point of view. The best clients to work for will spot a 'generic agency' or 'generic consultant' a mile off. We all know the saying, 'knowledge is power' and without any genuine knowledge guess what will happen when pitching for business?

2.Candidate Search/ Resourcing- Funnily enough, this has also changed somewhat. I remember when I first started you could simply advertise a new role on the standard job boards, go home and await a mass influx of applications to work through the next day. Now I'm not saying that all applications were good but there would be a few solid relevant candidates to work with. Now, due to new job sites, network sites etc... The candidate pool has somewhat diversified. There is no "one-stop-shop" jobsite to find all of your candidates anymore.

A variety of job sites must now be used alongside other methods of referrals, advertising, network sites etc.... Now let's say you find your candidate, the same rules as with business development apply. You cannot call a good candidate and speak generically about roles demonstrating your lack of knowledge. You must show you have a good understanding of the market as a whole; an understanding of what it is they do and most importantly an excellent understanding of the role and company you are trying to sell. Too many consultants do not truly understand what it is their clients actually do.

For example, if you are recruiting a technical role, you need to know more than a list of technologies that is required, you need to know why they are used, how they are used, how extensive a candidates knowledge needs to be within a certain technology etc.... And most importantly consultants need to understand what a candidate wants from their next role. It is no good pushing a candidate towards a position that doesn't truly offer the progression they crave; the consultant will get found out.

In summary, recruitment is a great industry because it is always evolving. A consultant that billed 250k+ five years ago has no guarantee to bill the same in today's market unless they keep up-to-date with the current recruitment methods. More of the 'blaggers' are found out in today's market as a good recruitment consultant has to have more knowledge, you cannot sell an opportunity unless you understand what it is you are selling.

Finding Construction Jobs in Fields Other Than New Construction

By Rob Milla

If you are considering a career in construction you may want to think twice construction jobs are in very short supply. The unemployment for construction related jobs is very high and many of this jobs have gone down in value, because many of these jobs were and are going to undocumented workers. If you still want to pursue a career in the construction industry, you should consider formal training at a trade school and preferably in a trade that requires substantial time to learn.

Some skills are in demand regardless of the state of the economy for example, air condition, heating and plumbing are not dependant on new construction. These are construction jobs, but they are also service jobs. A couple of years of training in air conditioning and heating is often enough to start a new job with an air conditioning and heating company. The time spent in these programs also means, that you take a break from a weak economy and when you are done will come back ready to work in a better economic climate. Two year programs are not necessary, but programs that necessarily require two years of training are likely to pay off in the long run. The harder it is to enter a particular trade or profession, the less likely the demand for these positions will be met. Associations and unions after make it more difficult for new people to enter their particular field and set up high standards that will in fact improve the quality of the services, but also increase the cost of entry and the cost to consumers. This in turn benefits those who can stick it out and those that are in the profession.

If you have the skill and experience, then a service oriented job would be an alternative to finding jobs in new construction. There are many opportunities to become self employed as a handyman or for small home improvement projects. Many states allow contracting for repairs for projects that can be done in 2 days or less without any type of a construction license.

Home improvement and home renovation as well as home repairs are not depending on new construction. Major expenses such as additions are more likely to be affected by a weak economy, but many home improvement projects as well as home repair projects are not affected much. If home owner has windows needing to be replaced, chances are they will replace them.

A weak economy and poor lending practices have led to a significant increase in foreclosures. As result homes are often abandoned and thieves often gut these homes out of copper wiring and plumbing, doing significant damage in the process. Some are vandalized while vacant and some are occupied and destroyed by teens and young adults using them as party houses. Banks, lenders, and real estate investors are also likely to do home renovations prior to selling a house, or renting a house. This increased number of foreclosures often means opportunities for skilled construction workers. These are not new construction jobs, but they still require the same skill and know how to renovate these homes and in fact present a lot of opportunity in home improvement and repair for skilled construction workers.

Construction jobs are available, but are small in number and only a few can and have obtained these jobs, but most are struggling to keep their jobs, but nontraditional construction jobs in service oriented business are presenting opportunities for those with skills.

Finding An Affordable Handyman In Undersupply Of Construction Jobs Market

By Arnold Hernandez

In today's economy construction jobs are in short supply and talented construction workers should be in very high supply. Often skilled construction workers turn to self employment as handymen or for their particular area of expertise. For consumers this could be good news, because it means more competition in the marketplace for fewer jobs.

For the construction worker it means it will be more difficult to find construction jobs.

Finding an affordable handyman for those of us with no connection to the construction or other skilled labor trades may be a difficult task, but there are many means of obtaining leads. If you are in need of an affordable handyman should consider discussing the need for a handyman with people he or she knows. This strategy is course true of many things such as cheap plumbers, bathroom contractors, and the like. This means discussing it with everyone we know, including service providers such as bank tellers, grocery clerks, and other people we frequent often.

In your search you should naturally start with your family and friends and then move on to merchants and service providers. If you are uncomfortable or unsuccessful then you can go through the want ads and services section of the newspapers, bulletin boards, and other such advertising media.

The problem in searching through advertising media is that you really don't know what you are getting, there is no indication at all of what you would be getting and there is not trusted source as to the quality or character of the handyman. This would mean more careful evaluation of the prospective handyman and perhaps more stringent terms in negotiating an agreement.

Communicating the need to friends and family will often result in many leads. Once a lead is obtained the next thing is to thank the person for the lead and then follow up on the lead. The communication with the prospective lead should probably include mentioning the source of the lead and then an interview of relevant questions should follow. Depending on how the lead was obtained, the degree of care in interviewing the prospective handyman should be enhanced or reduced.

A referral from a very credible source should of course lead to very good leads and the quality and price should be very good as well. Referrals from unknown sources and less quality sources likewise should require more diligence in your interviewing, since the quality is likely to be inferior. There is no sure thing when it comes to a referral, but the probabilities skew in one direction or another depending on the source of the lead.

A handyman should be more than just an affordable handyman, the handyman should actually be skilled in his craft, which in reality means knowing a lot about different things and having the tools to undertake the tasks. It makes no sense to hire a handyman or anyone else for that matter just because they are cheap. More often than not you get what you pay for. Going cheap may be very high risk and if the particular service you are seeking involves repair of bathroom plumbing, or electrical work, or gas lines you probably do not want to go solely on basis of price as cheap could result in substantial water damage, a fire, or an explosion.

The cheap plumber, handyman, or bathroom contractor could end up casting you more than hiring the expensive one. There are some tasks where you should be very careful in who you select as they can involve high risk of damage to your property or injury to your family.

Your evaluation of a handyman should include questions about the particular task you intend to initiate the relationship, years of experience, and questions about repairs in general. You should consider researching a few repairs and then based on your need found knowledge test the prospective handyman for competence. If they pass the competency test, then it is a matter of getting the right price.

I Hate My Boss!

By Alicia Samson

I hate my boss! This is a sentiment that is felt by far too many people. That’s why revenge websites, books, and even movies are becoming so popular. Employees are desperate to find ways in which they can work effectively on the job while dealing with a boss who is a pain in the neck.

Well, in some situations, bosses are so unprofessional, hate should turn into action. For example, racist or sexist bosses needed to be reported, since these behaviors are unacceptable. The same can be said for bosses who are emotionally abusive. Of course, filing a report may not do anything, but you’d be surprised at how many people do not even take that step. Sometimes bosses might change if they feel their job is in jeopardy.

Now, if filing a report does not work, or if it is not possible, employees may want to consider getting a different job. Yes, such advice might seem cliche, but it really holds true. No one can perform well in an environment where they are constantly harassed or degraded. There are just too many other jobs out there.

Of course, if money is a concern, employees are going to have to plan things out before quitting. Some solutions could involve getting a roommate or selling an expensive possession. Or, perhaps the Internet could offer a small income, whether it is selling on e-Bay, writing articles for Associated Content or even signing up for paid surveys.

Regardless, be careful before you do anything illegal. Many people naturally gravitate towards wanting to get revenge, or get even, with an ill-tempered boss. Keep in mind, that will get both of you nowhere. Well, unless the revenge tactic is ethical and legal. There are plenty of good tactics out there... do some research, I bet you can find something fun that you will not feel guilty about afterwards. Always remember, revenge is a dish best served cold! And, actually, you may just enjoy it.

But always keep in mind, you will most likely need your boss in the future. Almost every employer nowadays will check with past employers for references. The last thing you need is to be given a bad reference - it can ruin your career. Of course, if you are not on good terms with your boss right now, you may not get the best reference in the world, but that will be a whole lot better then getting a negative reference. At least if you stay on good terms with your boss, they will either give you a decent reference, or not comment at all.

In conclusion, if you are one of the people saying I hate my boss, you need to do something about it. Do not wait around expecting your boss to change, because chances are they will not. Just worry about making yourself happy… even if it means taking a risk and quitting your job. At first you may be really scared, but eventually you will realize that it was the best decision you could make. Remember, money means nothing if you have to sacrifice your personal happiness in order to make it.

About the Author: Alicia Samson has studied and dutifully mastered the art of Revenge! Always ethical, always legal, always fun! You can find more of his advice at revengeking.com.

Being a Modern Truck Driver

By Doug Y

In the freewheeling days of the CB craze, a truck driver would deliver the load that he/she was on, driver to the nearest truck stop, grab the nearest pay phone, call their dispatcher or broker and then wait until there was another load available, then deadhead to their new origin or place of pickup. In some cases this would require an over night stay at the truck stop.

The modern truck driver of today have many new technologies such as cell phones, computers or laptops, Qualcoms, GPS systems etc in order to obtain and deliver their loads from their companies dispatch.

This makes life a little easier on the drivers of today because this helps the drivers make more money by keeping those big wheels rolling all or most of the time with back to back loads instead of having to stop at a truck stop after every load to call dispatch to find their next load as in years past. The truck driver no longer suffers the almost total isolation as in years past. Truck drivers have come a long way since their predecessors - the Pony Express.

Drivers of today care more abut their rigs. Some like to fix them up with new decals, new technologies etc. They live everywhere. On every freeway, in nearly every corner of the continent, each of them hauling their loads, their livelihoods, and items from home such as sheets, and pillow cases for their bunks, blankets, pictures, TV’s and VCR’s, books, laptops, cassette tapes, CD players etc in order to make their sleeping area or the sleeper feel more like home since their rigs are basically their home away from home.

Since most drivers are away for long periods of time, sometimes up to a month at a time, they put in a refrigerator, a microwave and bring food from home with them and put it on the truck to save on the ever rising cost of eating at truck stops and such.

For some truck drivers, being on the road represents an artistic expression of independence and heritage thus also known now days at “The last of the cowboys.” whose lives were very similar back in the old western days. Some more of the reasons behind wanting to become a truck driver are many and very person has his own specific reason which prompts him to choose to become one. To some it may be the money, while to others it is the sheer love of being on the road. Yet others opt for the profession because of the health benefits that are given while on the job. Essentially one must love the job to become a dedicated trucker.

One very important reason for the hike in wages is the increasing shortage of truck drivers available. As a new driver the average annual income is thirty five thousand dollars which continues to rise with time. The wages are based on the number of miles logged in and the more the miles, the more the wages.

With jobs more difficult to find and competition fierce, you need any edge that will make your job hunt easier, or at the very least, more organized. A great job may conceivably have over one hundred applicants, so it is hard to make yourself visible without being overly aggressive or too pushy. The way you step ahead of the pack is simply by taking some of the right steps that make any employer notice you.

First, you need clarity in your own mind concerning the type of job for which you will be applying. If you are unsure where to begin, plan your job search according to your qualifications and life interests. To simply look through help wanted ads or the Internet without knowing what you want in a job will waste a lot of your time and lead to almost inevitable discouragement.

The most important tangible item an employer sees is your resume. Without a polished, clean looking, and organized resume, you will not get your foot in the door for an interview, much less the position. Therefore make sure that you have all the pertinent information required on a typical resume, and verify that it reads well.

You can accomplish this by incorporating “power” words that show off your responsibilities from prior jobs. Your resume should stand out without being "over the top." There are many online sites that help you learn how to prepare a great resume so your employers will be impressed by not only your credentials, but your professionalism as well.

A high quality resume will significantly improve your chances of receiving a call for an interview if you make sure you match your qualifications with the job you are pursuing. You do not want a resume that is too long (one page is preferable, two is maximum) or one that has too much fluff and is devoid of helpful content.

By sticking to the basics of work you have previously done and making it relevant to the job in which you are applying, you show the employer that you know their time is valuable by getting right to the point. Additionally, avoid writing a one-size-fits-all resume that is so generic it looks like a template. This is because most employers will simply spot your time-and-effort-savings technique and overlook your work.

If you have not had much relevant work experience but want to land the position with opportunities to move ahead down the road, consider adding some additional achievements in your resume. Make them factual and relevant to help your potential employer understand what you are capable of accomplishing.

This is a way of advertising yourself and which communicates you have the capability of handling the job successfully even if you haven’t had much experience. Do not list any weak points on your resume; that is not the time to tell them what you cannot do. (Your weaknesses will likely be asked of you during an interview.)

Finally, make sure to spend a good amount of time writing and polishing your resume. It takes time to advertise yourself, and by putting it together quickly or haphazardly, you will only fail to make the positive impression that you need to stand out from the crowd.

After sending a resume to a prospective employer, you may be called for your first of probably two or three interviews. The initial interview is critical because that is when the employer will likely decide whether to hire you and how you might fit with the company. This step is crucial, and you need to be prepared to enhance your likelihood of a successful interview and eventual job offer.

Before you even step one foot in the door of your prospective employer, you should completely research the company, its background, corporate goals, top executives, and anything pertinent to the position to which you have applied.

Additionally, knowing the background of the company and what you are going to be doing for that company will help you prepare for questions that will be asked of you. It would be time well spent to practice answering test questions with a friend or family member so you are able to provide confident, knowledgeable answers during the interview that make a positive impression.

When you show up on the day of the interview, it is best to arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes prior to the planned starting time. An early arrival shows you are punctual and that the job interview is important to you. You should be prepared with a couple extra copies of your resume in case additional people sit in on the interview, and you should always carry copies of any documents that they may require, such as certifications or school records.

Make sure your attire and general appearance reflects the standards of the company. It is best to show up in business appropriate clothing that is clean, ironed, and sharp looking. You do not want to be wearing excessive makeup or jewelry; and for a man, you should be clean shaven and neat.

If, for example, this is a "suite and tie" company and you come to the interview in jeans, you might as well cancel the interview altogether. By looking professional, you show you are ready to blend in with their business needs. Maverick thinking may help you land a great position, but a maverick appearance will not!

On meeting the people who will be interviewing you, it is best to smile at them directly, greet each with a firm handshake, and offer an enthusiastic hello. The more upbeat you are - without appearing contrived - the more apt they are to be drawn to you.

Always maintain good eye contact with the person who is interviewing you during the meeting. You do not want to appear intimidating, however, so occasionally look away when they are speaking with you. Conversely, you do not want to keep looking up or down because they could mistake this for dishonesty or disinterest. (You may be surprised by what is surmised from a person's body language.)

Lastly, when the interview has concluded, make sure to shake each person's hand again and thank them for their time. State how interested you are in the job and that you look forward to hearing from them. A brief follow up thank you letter to each person for their time and interest in you will not hurt your chances either.

Though following these tips certainly does not ensure you will be hired, they do help to maximize the positive impression you make on hiring decision-makers!

Senior Citizens and the Job Search

Although many employers are looking for new graduates or someone younger with a bit of experience, there are still plenty of jobs that you can secure as a senior citizen. Opportunities in the work force abound for older Americans. On the surface it may seem harder to find such roles; however they are available - you just need to know where and how to approach the search.

There is a great potential among older employees. They have more experience, are (generally) easier to work with, and typically more flexible than the person fresh from college who is more likely to have an implanted ideal of what their job should be like.

In other countries such as the Netherlands and Australia, younger employees are losing jobs to the more experienced and mature adults; in North America, this is a growing trend as well.

It is illegal, of course, to have someone ask your age when applying for a job, but hiring personnel can tell from application and resume information whether you may have been in the work force for some time. That is why instead of talking strictly about your age, you need to highlight your experience.

When putting together your resume, clearly list your accomplishments over the years and all your previous jobs. In your cover letter, focus on why you would be better suited for the job than a young applicant - even if you committed decades at home to raise children - thus helping employers understand the benefits in hiring you over a recent graduate with no real life experience.

If you have been out of work for a while or entering a field in which you have not had that much experience, consider enrolling in a class that can refresh your memory about that market or a class that can update you on new policies.

Businesses are constantly changing, and part of entering the work force again means learning contemporary methods of working rather than continuing the way work was done when you were younger.

The Internet has web sites offering opportunities for senior citizens, and shows relevant vacancies in the city in which you work. There are even specific agencies that work solely with senior citizens to make sure you can find a job in which you would be welcome.

Some of the fields that value the knowledge of a senior citizen include healthcare, public speakers, and writers. You simply need to determine what you may be interested in doing and then make the move to apply for jobs in your chosen field.

It is not so difficult to land a job when you are 60; you just need to become a bit savvy at learning where to look. Once you have found some options, spend some serious time developing a quality resume - as referenced above - to help make a compelling case for a potential employer why you are the best candidate for the available position.

And where age and prior experience are demonstratably to your advantage, be sure to note this clearly in the resume. Sometimes it is the nuances that make the difference between being offered an interview or simply skipped over.

Preparing For Your Job Interview

A job interview is one of the last hurdles you need to leap in order to land that job you seek. Even after having written a stellar resume, you will not likely be offered the position unless you fully prepare for the interview.

This requires some practicing of answers to the more frequently asked questions. There are always going to be standard questions that most potential employers ask. The best approach is to prepare yourself with some standard, honest answers in advance without sounding "rehearsed" or disinterested with the questions.

Questions You May Be Asked

One of the initial questions many employers ask concerns your previous job history. Although the questioner can read that same information straight from your resume, the interviewer frequently wants you to describe previous jobs in more detail along with specific responsibilities.

You may be quizzed on prior experiences, good or bad, accomplishments, and what you learned from each position. Questions concerning how you handled yourself in certain scenarios - typical or uncomfortable ones - and what you did to improve the situation are fairly common.

Why You Want to Work for This Company

Your reasons for wishing to join this particular company will almost surely be on the list of inquiries. Be prepared to respond with a clear and confident answer. Related to that question, you could be asked what sort of work or positions you expect to have with the company and how far you see yourself going.

Answers to questions like these can make or break an interview, so offer thoughtful and carefully considered responses. Demonstrate leadership capabilities with your answers and how your contribution to the company will positively impact their business.

The Money Issue

You may be asked to discuss salary. Although it is wise to wait until a second interview, if the employer pushes the issue, it is best to be honest about what you expect to earn from the job. If at that point you do not see eye-to-eye, you can simply indicate that you need to make a certain amount (whatever your bottom line amount may be). The hiring manager may be sufficiently impressed with you to offer what you ask.

Alternatively, if the feedback on your request is that they are under budget restraints and cannot meet your demand, then this is clearly not a win-win scenario for each of you. If the salary you communicated was indeed your bottom line offer, then don't take their denial personally. All companies have financial constraints, and there will be other options for you elsewhere.

Now it's Your Turn

Finally, after the questions from the potential employer have been completed, it is your turn to ask the questions. Come to the interview prepared with a short list of sincere questions. That alone shows you have interest and some level of initiative.

You may want to inquire about specific job duties or the company itself. This is the point to determine whether you think you are a good fit for the job.

After your questions, the interview will be completed and hopefully, if you are happy with the outcome of the discussion, you will be called back for a second interview or even a job offer. That is the point where you know your advance preparation has paid off.

10 Ways to Win a Job Interview

Author: Lamar Deane

In addition to correctly answering every question an interviewer asks, there are other ways in which you can make a conscious effort to impress an interviewer, and make sure that he or she remembers you, even after you've left the interview.

1. Be Prepared:

What questions you are likely to be asked is not the only thing you need to know when preparing for a job interview. Arriving at the appointment on time, or better yet, arriving early is something you will need to be mindful of. Map out the route to the company...maybe even driving there...to see how long it takes to get there. Just in case the original resume you sent has gotten lost or misplaced, you should take a copy with you. Also, you may want to take along something to read in case you have to wait a little while before the interview.

2. Dress Appropriately:

A girl wearing jeans or a guy in a T-shirt isn't the appropriate dress for a job interview. Since hirers usually take notice of these things, you're less likely to get the job than someone dressed in conservative business attire. You can never be too overdressed for a job interview unless you're wearing a tux or evening gown.

3. Be Confident:

Approval from an interviewer is getting that phone call to come in and be interviewed for the company. You may have thought you weren't qualified enough for a position, but the interviewer saw something different. It's important that you believe you are capable of performing the job, if the company who calls you believes the same thing. Want an interviewer to remember you? Project an air of confidence without sounding conceited or cocky. Talk about your skills and experience with pride and...above all...let the interviewer know that you think you could do a good job.

4. Make Eye Contact:

Maintaining direct eye contact and being attentive throughout the interview are ways to project confidence. To assure the interviewer that you are both on the same page, always look this person directly in the eye. What if there's more than one person? When answering questions in front of two or more people, move from person to person, but make sure to establish eye contact with each person long enough so that you don't seem shifty.

5. Show Your Enthusiasm:

A candidate who lacks confidence is bad enough, but one who lacks enthusiasm is even worse. This lack of behavior will probably only frustrate the interviewer. Show how willing and excited you are about taking on a new challenges and tasks the company may ask of you. Even if you're not familiar with the job, show how eager you are to learn. When showing enthusiasm, like showing confidence, there is a line you have to walk to be sure you seem originally excited but not obsequious or insincere.

6. Know The Position:

You should know something about the job position you are applying to and an idea of the type of person the company is looking for. To learn more about the tasks involved, talk to friends or people you know in that type of job or industry. Think of a few tasks you think you will be asked to perform and prepare answers to these questions.

7. Know The Industry:

Do research and find out as much as you can about the industry, and let the interviewer know that you are willing and ready to deal with the day-to-day tasks of the job at hand and you have a strong knowledge of the industry as a whole.

8. Know The Company:

As important as knowing the job and knowing the industry is, knowing the company is probably most important. The interviewer will most likely ask you questions about the company, so you will be a more impressive candidate if you not only have the skills to do the job well, but also have strong knowledge of the company.

9. Practice:

Practicing your answers to questions that are likely to be asked, is the key to projecting a calm and confident exterior during the interview. Practicing for an interview can be done in front of a mirror or role-play with a friend.

10. Follow Up:

Once the interview is over don't stop there. Be sure to follow up with a quick note or a short friendly phone call to the person with whom you spoke. A follow-up will help keep your name fresh in the interviewers mind.

More often than not, resumes are your first introduction to an organization – giving them the responsibility of persuading the reader to want more. It is common for individuals to agonize over writing a resume and more often than not the finished product looks more like a career obituary or personal statement than a first class ticket to your dream job. A resume is an advert, an advert that introduces an individual, their career achievements to date and predicts how they will perform in their next role.

With only one resume out of every 200 leading to an interview, it is important to ensure that yours is the one that gets noticed. There are a number of key tips to writing a resume that will come alive in the readers’ hand, read on to find out more.

Step 1 – Research

Before starting to write your resume you need to do some preliminary research so you can tailor it to the jobs that you wish to apply for. Writing a broad resume can exclude you from specific positions that you apply for.

o What do I want to do? Research job specifications, websites, industry press.

o What makes me the best candidate for any job? Research job specifications, websites and industry press to discover the types of candidate’s organizations are looking for. Use this research and speak to people within the industry to draw up a list of your skills, characteristics and experience that makes you the best candidate for any job.

o Select the jobs that you would like to apply for

Step 2 - Write your primary job objective (this gives the reader incentive to read on)

An XX position in an organization where YY and ZZ would be required.

Step 3 - Write your summary

Using the research and brainstorming create a summary that articulately matches your skills and experience to the job requirements.

o A short phrase describing your profession

o A statement of broad or specialized expertise

o Use 2/3 additional statements

o Breadth & depth of skills

o Unique mix of skills

o Special or well documented accomplishment

o Awards, promotions or superior performance

o 1 or 2 professional or appropriate personal characteristics

o Add in the sentence you created in Step 2

E.g. Solution focused and driven human resources executive with eight years experience in strategic management and large scale recruitment projects. The national lead for retention policies within a large healthcare provider that has lead to a 15% reduction in turnover among nurses nationwide. Seeking a senior HR management role that offers extensive project work.

Step 4 Resume Format

Now you have your job objective and summary, choose what format of resume best suits your type of job search. There are 3 main types of resumes:

Chronological – This is the most common. It is a chronological listing of your work experience with the most recent first. It is best for:

o People who have practical work experience without long periods of unemployment and minimal job / industry changes.

o Individuals who have shown growth within a single professions

Functional – This resume format focuses on skills, credentials and accomplishments. It highlights what the strengths are rather than when / where they were developed. The main formatting difference is that after the job summary / objective you list your professional or business skills and successes, followed by a list of the positions held. It is best for individuals who:

o Have lots of job experience and many jobs

o Are just entering the work force with no / little track record

o Are just pre-retirement and have lots of work experience

o Are returning after a period of absence (return after maternity/paternity leave or long term sickness)

o Are changing careers / do not have consistent career growth

o Are Military personnel seeking civilian jobs

Combination – This resume format is a combination of the chronological and functional types. It is best for individuals who:

o Are advancing in the prospective careers and have an established track record they want to keep.

Step 5 Success Stories

Whatever format you choose you still want to include between 2-5 professional success stories for each role you have had. A useful method to help you create a strong resume is the mnemonic is CARS. For each job held think of Challenges you faced, Actions you took, Results or outcomes and finally Skills / Strengths that this showed you have. Using this story to create a sentence that speaks to how successful you were at your previous role. Remember to refer back to the words used and requirements detailed in the job description and use them where necessary so your resume is tailored to the hiring manager’s specific requirements.

E.g.

C – We needed to recruit 10 nurses before the opening of a new hospital ward in 4 wks time

A – Worked with team to create a shorter recruitment turnaround time, created a Team Leader specific to the project and negotiated the buy in of senior managers to sign off new recruits.

R – Recruited and trained all 10 within the 3 weeks, reducing the predicted $500k agency spend.

S – Negotiation, team leadership, meet deadlines, motivation, intuition and creative problem solving.

Resume – Successfully managed a team that recruited 10 nurses, expedited their training and start date in order to meet a 1 month deadline, saving the hospital a predicted $500k in agency spend.

Step 6 Education & Publications

Enter in reverse chronological order after your work experience and accomplishments.

The only time you put education directly under the summary would be:

o Recently graduated
