Creative Baby Shower Gifts Under $25

By Mandie Klein

Creative baby shower gifts are aplenty and within budget. You don't have to break your bank just to get adorable little enchanted fairy tale carriage favor boxes to impress your friends who are going to be mommies soon. Read on for more creative ideas for baby shower gifts.

Getting Creative and Getting the Kudos

Shopping for creative baby shower gifts can be challenging, even to the most experienced moms and dads going to a baby shower or being given one. Why? They all experience that Jell-O in the arm feeling when faced with the daunting task of selecting that one gift that will bring on appreciative smiles. As parents, they want to give something both beautiful and practical, just like what they wanted when they got tons of baby gifts during the baby showers hosted for them.

Be creative. Shopping for baby gifts can be interesting. True, traditional baby shower gifts are appropriate for the occasion, but you can pull in a fast one by making these gifts truly creative, bearing your personal touch. How?

Traditional items like gift baskets can contain personalized bibs, booties, and even onesies. Hand-knitted blankets, picture frames, and piggy banks score a win when personalized, but what if you're broke and looking at $25? You can't welcome a special bundle of joy with a ho-hum gift that will gather dust or stay unused for years.

Lovely Baby Shower Gifts That Won't Cost You

Don't despair. There are baby shower gifts below $20 that won't have you losing face when the mom-to-be opens the colorful package. Here are some creative baby shower gifts you'll be happy to give:

* Beautiful and personalized burp cloths

* Gift sets with T-shirts, tank tops, pants, bib, cap and booties

* Charming keepsake boxes

* World's Greatest Mommy things (e.g. cheese grater)

* Personalized baby mugs

* Four-piece gift sets

* Personalized baby pacifiers

* Bottle holders

* Monogrammed diaper bags

* Tot's dish sets

Don't be afraid to give non-traditional or creative baby shower gifts below $20. Clue in to items for baby travel, feeding and bath items, and items for a sick baby, just in case. You'll also do well with breastfeeding support items for the mom such as breast pads and lanolin ointment.

Baby travel items make for creative baby shower gifts - rubber duckies, disposable wash cloths, infant toiletry, and some goodies for the mom. Don't forget to tuck in some pain relievers for both mom and dad; they'll need these while on the road. You may want to try out those sick baby items that include a baby thermometer. This will be greeted with sighs of relief because moms-to-be often forget these essential items.

The Mommy/Daddy Agenda

Don't get it wrong. Baby showers are also the time to pamper the moms-to-be. So if you are stumped with what to give for a baby who has yet to make an appearance, focus on the mom and dad. They'll lap up all the attention you'll shower on them with practical items like nifty bottle openers, key chains, votive candle holders, and scented bath oils.

Also, creative baby shower gifts do not mean you'll have to get stuck with so-so items that have been used to death, or the usual baby shower gifts that are beyond your budget. Baby shower gifts under $25 can save you sleepless nights. So get up and go creative. Spoil mom and dad and the baby, too.

My First Microscope - Stereo Or Compound?

By Charles Crookenden

“Should I buy a compound or a stereo microscope for my child?” is perhaps the most frequently asked question to the staff at The Microscope Store, LLC. For those who do not have children already fascinated by dissection, blood cells and smears, the answer is almost always, “Buy a stereo microscope”. Such a definitive response is bound to raise an outcry from some experienced microscopists, but the reality is that a stereo microscope wins the vote for a number of solid reasons.

The overwhelming reason for buying a stereo microscope is that it is the type of microscope that you need to view specimens that kids love: bugs, worms, leaves, feathers, hair. Anything that is visible to the naked eye and that can easily be found in the yard or house. Since it takes a moment to set up a stereo microscope, the child has the instant gratification of viewing what he or she just found before there is any danger of wandering attention. In our house the wonders of a housefly’s eye, a bee’s stinger and shiny rocks have all caused cries of delight to ring out through the house: “Look, Dad, that’s so cool”. Music to a parent’s ears. More often than not, such cries of excitement attract younger siblings and other family members so that poor housefly can easily turn into a fully participative, cross-generational occasion. Roll over the TV and video game! We keep our stereo microscope handy so there is little danger of it being relegated to the black hole of the children’s cupboard.

Part of a kid's pleasure in a stereo microscope lies in the fact that a stereo microscope is binocular and provides 3D images of the specimen. A compound microscope requires a child to squint through a single eyepiece at a flat image. In other words, that bug is real and tangible in its magnified glory.

A stereo microscope is also easier to actually operate than a compound microscope. The simplest form of stereo microscope is a dual power or turret microscope. It is perfect for that first ‘real’ microscope; in other words, one that is not a toy. It has two objectives, usually 1x/3x or 2x/4x and with 10x eyepieces, therefore, two levels of magnification – 10x/30x or 20x/40x. A child needs only to learn to switch from one objective to another in order to change the magnification power and then to focus. In addition, a dual power microscope typically has a single coarse focusing knob so there is no added complication of both coarse and fine focusing found on compound microscopes.

A decent stereo microscope is also cheaper than an equivalent compound microscope as the optics are simpler. For about $250, you can buy a stereo microscope that will last

On the other hand, compound microscopes are complex. Typically, they include four of five objectives and are designed for viewing specimens not visible to the naked eye – cellular structures and the like. As a result, you have to buy prepared slides or make your own prepared slides. The results while often stunning, are not as immediately gratifying to younger children. Moreover, at higher magnifications, they are more difficult to focus. In other words, compound microscopes are better suited to older children or to younger children who are genuine enthusiasts. Typically, children begin to attune to a compound microscope around the age of 5th Grade although this is, of course, an overly simple generalization.

That said, any microscope has benefits across the generations. For the kids, it offers all sorts of cool, phantasmagoric images to equal the most evil aliens imagined. Yet it also opens their eyes to a completely different and very real perspective on the world. For parents, it is something other than a video game or TV to share with them while also lending the satisfying knowledge that, apart from being fun, it is also educational! Under a microscope, the kids can view whatever they like. They learn and perhaps most important, they retain some wonderful visual images that help fire their imagination in other ways. You will doubtless witness some innovative new alien life form drawings to prove it!

Have Fun With Mother’s Day Gift Ideas—Going Beyond The Card!

By Rochelle Karina

Every year, on the second Sunday in May, mothers across the nation sit in bed and await the “traditional” mothers day breakfast in bed. Though they’re excited, and honored, they cringe, knowing what’s coming is burned toast, cold eggs, watery coffee and soggy cereal. Trust me; it takes a mother to appreciate that type of “breakfast.” But it’s not the food that makes this the most special meal of the year. Nope, what makes it special are those little hands that helped prepare it, and the smiling face hovering above the tray.

Mother’s Day became an official holiday in 1914 when—thanks to the urging of Anna Jarvis—President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as a day for honoring mothers. From the very beginning, carnations have been a traditional mothers day flower; Miss Jarvis began the tradition of wearing a white carnation, and it later developed to wearing a red carnation if your mother was still living, and a white if she had passed. Flowers for mothers day have become the modern-day version of this and mothers day flowers delivery has become a big business. And why not? As a society, we’ve become more and more widespread, and for most, it’s not like we can stop at the local flower shop, pick up a dozen reds and head over to Mom’s. Instead, we get by with a little help from our friends—the online florist!

The Internet is full of Mother’s Day trivia and humor, touching stories and fun factoids. It’s also full of mother’s day gift guides and suggestions. Over the years, I’ve been blessed enough to be buying gifts for mothers day for a variety of women and I’ve learned a few things to make it a lot easier, and more fun! Delivery isn’t just for flowers anymore, that’s for sure, and I want to make these women feel as special as they truly are.

The first thing I learned was mothers day baskets are my friend! What do you get for the woman who has everything? Or the one who has so many kids, siblings, etc. that more flowers would simply get lost in the shuffle? You turn to the handy-dandy gift basket—nothing says, “You’re special and I love you” quite like a mothers day gift basket overflowing with goodies. The best thing about baskets is there are so many choices! It’s not just all about cheese and fruit anymore. Your mothers day basket could be filled with cookies and candies, spa products, gardening tools, or just about anything you can imagine. It’s all out there; there’s something for everyone; for every taste and every budget. I truly enjoy finding just the right basket for each woman on my list; it’s fun.

My next favorite go-to gift is mothers day plants. They’re the gift that keeps on giving, long after the flowers are gone; and definitely after the meal is but a memory; the plant is still there. My mom’s garden was literally full of plants she received as gifts from us kids. And she knew just who gave her each one. Even when she was on the other side of the country, I knew I could arrange for a mothers day delivery of a special plant. With the Internet, finding the right plant, one that suits the recipient’s taste and climate, is easy and you can find everything from tropicals to succulents online.

There is always the woman who doesn’t have a green thumb, and that would be me. Seriously, I’ve got a long list of girlfriends, sisters and other women all of whom I like to give little gifts to on Mother’s Day. They’re special women in my life, and I like to say “thank you” and “I love you” to each in a personal way. Not everyone is into flowers, and not everyone likes plants. But there is one thing that every single one of the women on my mothers day gifts delivery list does enjoy—chocolate.

For the ones who would kill a plant just by touching it (like me); the ones who have wonderful husbands and children who give them flowers and other nice gifts, I turn to gifts of mothers day chocolate. Even that can be put into basket and delivered! And there’s the big bonus—combo gifts. Mixing it up with flowers, plants, chocolate and other goodies gives me all sorts of gift-giving options when it comes time to pick out a mother’s day gift for all the special ladies in my life.

Yeah, maybe I’m over the top. But I don’t think so. You see, I’m one who would be wearing a white carnation—I can’t call Mom up and say, “I love you” anymore. But there are a lot of women in my life who are still here—sisters, friends, and other special mothers—and I’m not going to miss an opportunity to show them how much I love and appreciate them. Nope. Not me. Now, pardon me, but I have to go brace myself for the breakfast that is to come.

Hurricane Preparation Tips in 2008 - What Your Family Must Bring and What to Avoid

By Glen B. Stewart

Hurricane Preparation Tips in 2008 - What Your Family Must Bring and What to Avoid Without Exception

Each and every year thereís a deadly season of hurricanes that devastate the Americas. The dreaded hurricane season 2008. Typically these deadly hurricane nightmares have more destructive energy than 1000 nuclear bombs. I was stunned to hear this for several reasons. But more on that later.

First I will cover the critical hurricane preparation tips I recommend based on my experiences of 2007. First I will cover the common sense basics. Then I will progress to some really savvy tips I either learned or gleaned myself since last year. Finally, I have a few surprises that may in fact be very forward thinking. This is due to ironically a holistic healing visionary named Glen B. Stewart.

Hurricane preparation tip - Be sure to make a detailed list of all the critical items each of the family members must have on a daily basis. For example any prescription medications. Of course consider other possibilities such medication for allergic reactions like bee stings.

A complete first aid kit of the small boating variety I consider pivotal. And generally casing on this type is waterproof. If you get the plastic first aid case it will float as well.

Also get a box of those 1 gallon resealable style bags. These resealables are great for storing just about everything from food to fresh sets of kids clothing. It will float and keep the contents dry if not loaded down with heavy items.

Establish a set of hurricane evacuation maps for your entire family. Go over these every several weeks during hurricane season. Pick several safe and secure alternates just in case the first one is either full or inaccessible. Go over your hurricane evacuation plan six or seven times at least the beginning Week of Hurricane Season 2008.

For family members who cannot typically carry a cell phone, consider a pager. A pager can boh reach any child with your current phone number and tell them to reach you back ASAP.

And then there is the promising research possibility of Hurricane Reduction. Far fetched? Yes. Is it Proven effective on deadly hurricane force winds? Yes again, Glen B. Stewart has done it already 10 times in a row.

In fact, when news first broke worldwide of Glen B. Stewart and his visionary research into mind over matter combined with energy healing. This he later coined the Stewart principle. A true evolutionary milestone for mankind. A universal healing principle of global healing synergy. This amazing principle could be used to manifest healing energies towards anyone or anything. Even Reducing deadly Hurricanes and Tornados.

So how can Glen B. Stewart, the father of modern hurricane reduction improve on his proven hurricane dissipation technique? By duplicating these globally acclaimed efforts to as many caring individuals possible. He has put together an extraordinary series of hurricane reduction videos. This landmark series of life-saving hurricane reduction videos is called the One with The Winds workshop.

Pluto in Capricorn and Indigo Children

By Dawne Kovan

Every time I pick up an astrological journal or even an ordinary newspaper, I read doom and gloom articles that seem designed to send us even deeper into a slough of despond. The recession, the major shifts in corporate power, modern slavery - all coming as the inevitable result of Pluto entering Capricorn.

I tend to look at life somewhat differently - in that I see it as a process of developing and shifting social and technological mores and values. I also work with the Law of Attraction, which has taught me that nothing simply happens without it being attracted in some way or another. By which I mean that as we focus on our fears of recession, bankruptcy, and loss of individual power that is exactly what we are likely to experience.

Conscious Entities

If on the other hand, we look at what the process this upcoming energy brought into being around 20 years ago, we can begin to understand how things are likely to work out differently. If we agree that life is a process, and not sliced like cheese, then we can accept also that the planets in their orbits reflect that process. They are weaving around the Zodiac, always inter-relating and inter-acting. An ancient view of the planets understood them to be conscious entities, and therefore conscious of each other. In other words, as conscious beings they know exactly where each planet is in relation to the others. So, in their orbiting and spiralling around the Sun they will all visit and revisit the same areas of the Zodiac ad infinitum and communicate this to each other.

From the moment of the Big Bang, that was the birth of the Universe, these conscious entities "knew" where and more importantly for us, when they would "arrive" at a particular point of the Zodiac at any given point. Therefore, instead of looking at the ingress of Pluto into Capricorn with trepidation, we should look (possibly) at the state of Capricorn as it is at present. In other words, when we enter a room, we can always tell if someone's been there before us by the state that the room is in. Any mother knows that!

At the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s we had an extraordinary astronomical event occurring: Saturn, Uranus and Neptune came together in conjunction at the very last degrees of Sagittarius and the first degrees of Capricorn. The last time these 3 planets met up like this was in 1307 and at that time Saturn's involvement was a single event - in other words, Saturn passed over Uranus and Neptune and went on his way beyond them, quite quickly, into Aquarius. This recent meeting was a triple event with the conjunction taking a few years to dissipate, due to the retrogradation of Saturn in Capricorn.

Life always offers solutions

From moment to moment in time no matter what the condition of the planets and signs, babies are born, obviously. Those babies that are born under special skies embody special energies - and they do this for a reason. Life always offers solutions to the ills that our planet and our society, and even our bodies, will suffer. And these children are our solution. The degrees of this last triple conjunction are the same degrees that Pluto crosses over through the next few years - and indeed has been crossing the last couple of years as well. In other words, life's need produces its cures.

On an historical note, the last times that Pluto entered Capricorn for 16-7 years in recent times were: 1516-1532 and 1762-1778. During the years leading up to these Pluto transits, there were no other slow moving planets occupying Capricorn. However, just to give one example of my thinking here, in 1489 Thomas Cranmer was born under a conjunction of Saturn and Uranus in Capricorn opposite his Sun in Cancer. During the subsequent Pluto occupation of Capricorn, which could have ratchetted up the power of the established Church, he was instrumental in the process of Henry VIII's divorce of Catherine of Aragon. In other words, the Reformation was started during this period - which astrologers of the time would not have predicted. As an aside, I suggest that the Saturn Uranus opposition of Cranmer's Sun reflects his relationship with his unpredictable Royal master.

The Indigo Children

This generation of children who were born under the very demanding combined energies of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune (1988-1991 and beyond, because it wasn't until 1996 that Uranus left Neptune alone in Capricorn) are sometimes referred to as "Indigo Children". A name that seems to suggest their vibrations are at the opposite end of the spectrum to the red/warrior types. If we simply take the symbolism of the three planets in turn we get Saturn structure, Uranus breaking through and Neptune spiritualising and refining. So to make a coherent image, I see this as the type of mentality and way of functioning in the world that offers ways to break through old forms and refine and idealise human behaviour.

Many of these children are able to process and organise information very differently, even digitally, and are naturally frustrated by teachers who were trained in the old-fashioned analogue systems. Their behaviour has been labelled as dysfunctional - ADHD, Aspergers syndrome and dyslexia. And it may not be true. An interesting question to ask is: who was getting things wrong for whom and who was punished for it? As they are now reaching their late teens and early twenties, many of them are "suddenly" emerging as normal, ordinary people- those that weren't drugged into submission by over-zealous medics, that is.

Growing up is hard to do

James Hillman suggests in his book "The Soul's Code" that children who have difficult behaviour patterns in their earliest years, do so as a reaction to their "knowing" that their adult lives will be challenging. He says that the weight of their destiny is hard for their small selves to carry. And surely as astrologers, we can understand that - the effort of carrying major outer planet influences to personal planets must be exhausting and frightening, to say the least, for a baby of 18 months or so. I would posit a link between Hillman and the ideas of those who talk about "Indigo children". To find out more - simply Google Indigo Children -there's lots of information.

So, how to break the grip of our present encroaching new ice age of Pluto in Capricorn and circumnavigate the increasing power of large corporations, oligarchs and international mafia? The internet is the medium of the triple conjunction children - it was being developed during their earliest years and they grew along with it. I recently read a newspaper article saying that many of the young rock/pop bands are refusing to sign up with Sony and other multi-national recording companies, and are doing their own promotion and marketing over the internet. Similarly with writers, many are making small fortunes publishing ebooks. This ‘do-it-yourself' approach to marketing will certainly offer alternatives to the more traditional ways of doing things, and may leech some of the power away from the big corporations.

We adults can now have no idea what these young people and their children, and those children already stepping into the education systems now will follow as careers - the technology hasn't even been born yet that will offer new ways of travel, education, food provision to name but a few. You can bet, however, that the children who will create them have - they are already here. Exciting, isn't it?

Planning A Baby Shower Party For Your New Baby

By Ann Marier

There seems to come a time in every family when there is a boom of births. This also seems to happen with weddings, as it seems that once you get one wedding invitation in the mail there are at least six different ones to follow within the next year. I’m not sure why this is, but it seems to be something that happens in every family. When someone is getting married, you may want to throw them a wedding shower, or if a baby is on the way, you may want to go about planning a baby shower.

There may be nothing sweeter than planning a baby shower. Though there is always some uncertainty that comes with pregnancy, by the time you are planning a baby shower, you can be pretty certain that the pregnancy is going to be a successful one. A shower is often a promise of a new life, and a great way to celebrate not only the baby, but the mom to be. Many moms look forward to this special day, as it is one of the first celebrations of their new child that they will have.

Planning a baby shower does not have to be that difficult. If you are indeed planning a shower for someone, you probably know them pretty well. You will know what they like and what they don’t like, and how much they might expect. If you are planning a baby shower for somebody who is finicky and fickle, you may want to consider handing the party over to someone else. This will be up to you of course, but there’s no sense in giving yourself a heartache over something someone will not appreciate. Planning a baby shower should be fun and light, and should be something that you want to do with your whole heart.

When planning a baby shower there are a few things that you should do. Games are always a hit, even if everybody whines when they are announced. No one likes to admit that they love to play these games, but everyone will have fun when they do. Also make sure that you have light snacks and something healthy to drink when planning a baby shower. Make sure you give your guests plenty of notice, and make accommodations for out of town guests. If someone could not attend, you should offer them your address so that they may ship a package out ahead of time if they choose to do so. This will add an extra special touch to any baby shower.

Economy Got You in the a Bad Way?

By Lou Martiniano

Here we are in the most wealthy country in the world at the most prosperous time and our economy is going down the drain. What can be done about that when your income is not keeping up with all the price increases. There is not doubt we are getting further and further behind.

Your income is falling way behind what the prices are doing. The price of gas, home prices and inflation are causing most of our problems. It is really hard providing for your family if you are a parent and if you are single it is even harder. Just to try and get yourself started in your business life is really hard right now.

Whenever you turn around everything seems to keep falling apart. We now have a $700 million bail out by the government for Wall Street, of all things. But what about you, what have they done for you?

It just seems to get worse and worse every day and there are very few bright spots on the horizon. Even though everything looks dark and gloomy there are still a few bright spots.

You're probably wondering, what is this bright spot. Before we look at what that bright spot is let's look at the issue that's dogging all of us. Our phone bills are killing us. We get these great advertisements that tell us about all the savings they are going to give us only to find out that it costs us more.

Our average telephone bill, without long distance, is running between $60 to $85. That is a terrible amount to pay on a monthly basis. We are lured into these contracts only to find out later that they are charging us with all these usage fees, taxes, and God knows what else that end up costing us more and more and more.

Many of those that have cable TV are realizing much smaller phone bills even though they are calling their friends and family all over the country using digital phones without any additional charges. Here are two examples; one is Vonage digital telephone service. It hooks right up to your Internet and you are able to make phone calls without additional charges.

The bill is a standard monthly amount each month with on added fee. There is one additional fee, and because I'm not a Vonage user I don't know what that is, but the bill is about $27.52 per month instead of the $24.95 they advertise. But that is considerably cheaper than $65, $70 or $80 per month that we are used to paying for local calling.

Second, there are many other Internet cable providers that provide the same type of service. They usually are included as part of a package. Most of the packages are charging for digital phone around $33 with some are as high as $50. Still, the Internet package is a lot cheaper than the $65, $70, or $80 that many phone bills are.

So, in conclusion, if you are looking for a way to save cost, going to digital telephone service is the way to do it. This will save you at least $30 per month, probably more. My experience was I saved in excess of $60 a month by switching over.

I would suggest strongly that you switch over to digital phone. Even if you don't have cable you can use DSL to go to a digital phone and make a huge savings. It can be as much as $1,200 a year savings. If you would like to know more about it follow my link in the authors box. And look for more money savings or income improving articles.

The Importance Of Selecting A Nanny

By Jenny Antelli

There are many factors that influence children as they are growing up. Parents, siblings, friends, teachers and television are a few of the obvious ones. A major influence in some families can also come in the form of a nanny.

A nanny is basically a substitute parent for part of a child’s day. He or she will make decisions for and say things to a child that could play a large factor in their attitude and behavior when growing up. Raising a child and finding a good nanny should not ever be taken lightly. With so many negative influences in the world today, it is critically important that the person chosen to nanny a child will be a positive influence in his or her day.

There are a few different options that are available when selecting a nanny. Some people may choose to find one on their own, while others may use an agency. If the decision is made to find a nanny without an agency, a lot more work will be required in order to insure a quality person, as background checks and research will need to be performed.

When using an agency, the agency will provide a list of potential nannies for you to choose from. The next step is to set up interviews with the individuals who may fit the situation. Interviewing a potential nanny is an important part of the process as it is one of the best ways to learn about the personality of the person. A child care provider’s personality will play a significant role in type of care that he or she will offer, so it is important to conduct a quality interview.

During an interview, treat the interviewee as if they were already under your employ. Ideally, there should be a variety of potential nannies provided by the agency that meet your requirements. The specific questions that should be asked are dependent on the qualifications that are being sought in a nanny, but there are a few general guidelines to follow.

It is important to verify all the information provided on his or her application/resume, especially asking about prior nanny positions. These past positions are great opportunities to learn about how specific situations have been handled in the past. Ask about worst situations they have encountered and what the outcomes were, and why they left the previous position. Be prepared to test interviewees with “what if” scenarios as well, such as fire emergencies or injuries. Another important type of question to ask has to deal with your specific requirements. If the child in question needs help with English homework, for example, the nanny that is hired would hopefully be able to help with that.

Overall, ask open-ended questions that relate to your specific needs and the needs of your child. Generally, yes or no questions will not get the information you desire. Be observant of a candidate’s tone and body language as well. Do not hide aspects of the job that you need this person for, but be open and honest about the position. Discuss salary, hours, responsibilities, duties, how time off is arranged, and anything else that may cause confusion or problems later on.

A face-to-face meeting is one of the best ways to determine the quality of the employee you will be hiring, so take this selection process seriously. This interview is to help you find someone that will be watching, taking care of, teaching and influencing your child. It is important to find someone who is worthy of the job.

A Taser Gun Can Be So Much Fun

By Andy Youtz

Modern day self defense has evolved from lethal baseball bats and 9MM handguns to non-lethal Pepper Spray and Taser Guns. Some people say that a Taser is not non-lethal, but more than 99.99% of the time they do not cause death or any serious medical injury. It is a fact that Taser (the company) has been sued many times for causing death yet they have not lost in court, but think of all the lives they saved by replacing the use of police handguns time and time again. If Taser Guns would not have been available an officer may have needed to resort to using a much more lethal firearm to stop an aggressor.

I am a dealer of Taser’s products and recently attended a conference that included some very hands on Taser training. An officer from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Department informed the crowd of about 175 of the details between different available Tasers. In case you are not aware of how this device works, let me fill you in. A Taser deploys two probes when fired that shoot out up to 15 feet and either attach to clothing or embed themselves in the skin. If operated correctly and the probes are more than 6 inches apart, the assailant will loose control of muscles and fall to the ground helpless. The unit sends out 50,000 volts that can last anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds depending on the model Taser Gun used. The model we were speaking about was the Taser C2. When the C2 is fired it continuously sends the 50,000 volts into the assailant until either the 30 seconds is up or the unit is turned off.

The demonstrating officer asked if there were any volunteers to be shocked by the Taser and surprisingly there were quite a few volunteers. I declined to be a participant in this, but had no problem watching nearly 15 others get the crap shocked out of them. One after another, people went up and told the officer know how long they wanted to be Tased. The first was fairly disappointing at only 3 seconds. It wasn’t even enough time to take him to the ground, but he made it very clear in his facial expressions that it was rather unpleasant. The next decided to be brave and went for 5 seconds. After about 3 seconds I heard a loud scream and “stop, stop, stop” then the officer stopped. I watched many give it a try and many fall to the ground helpless. About half the shocked guinea pigs screamed stop before the time they specified ahead of time was up. The times ranged from 5 to 10 seconds. Only one person impressed me when he said 8 seconds and made it through. I was thinking “no way”. This individual named Steve made it through all 8 seconds and took it like a man. It would be hard to imagine taking a full 30 second C2 Taser Gun shot and perhaps next year I will give it a try myself.

The Taser Gun is a very effective, affordable and safe method of self defense. In today’s violent world you should arm yourself to stay safe. Whether your choice of self defense devices are a Taser, pepper spray or stun gun you will have an unexpected advantage if attacked and be given the chance to escape with your life and unharmed.

Choosing a Booster Car Seat - How to Ensure Your Child's Comfort and Safety

By Tom Littlepage

If a child is using either a toddler only car seat, or a 'convertible' infant/toddler car seat, its time to transition the child into a booster car seat when he or she has outgrown the existing car seat restraints (usually at about 40 pounds), but is not yet ready for just seat belts (the minimum height recommended for a child to start using just seat belts is 4'9"). Booster car seats can typically accommodate a child from 30 to 100 pounds (usually 4 to 8 years of age). Child car seat manufacturers are bound by very strict guidelines, and you may be surprised to find that some of the more expensive car seats don't provide any better level of protection than those which are more moderately priced.

Many State laws require children to be in a safety car seat only up to age 4 or so, and many parents assume that children who are older than this will be safely restrained by just an adult safety belt. This, however, is not the case. An automobile's seat belt system is designed for use by adults, not small children, and it usually will not fit a child properly. A booster car seat is designed to improve the fit of the vehicle's safety belt system across the child's body, for greater comfort and safety. (A booster car seat should never be positioned in front of an air bag, as deployment of the bag can cause serious (even fatal) injuries to a child.)

Booster car car seats are available with either a "high back" or a "low back". High back car seats should always be used in cars without headrests, or with low seats, both to provide the child with a comfortable place to rest his or her head, and to provide protection against "whiplash" in an accident. Low back car seats are generally cheaper than high back car seats, and are easier to move from car to car, but should only be used in cars with headrests and high seat backs.

High back car seats are often available with a 5 point harness (when car seats are not being used with a harness, they are considered being used in the "belt positioning" mode). Using a harness is generally the safest way to restrain a child, and it is recommended that, if a harness is used, it be used until the child outgrows it (usually at about 40 pounds). There are also 'convertible' toddler/booster child car seats available. These car seats can be used for children from the time they are ready to start using a toddler car seat until they are ready to start using just the car seats belts.

Booster car seats are designed to raise the child up so that the lap and shoulder seat belts fit properly. Belt positioning car seats must always be used with a car's lap and shoulder belt (never with a lap only belt). The car seat will raise a child so the lap belt goes over the child's pelvis and hips (instead of his or her abdomen), and the shoulder belt crosses the middle of the child's chest and shoulder (the car seat may have a clip that can be adjusted to ensure that the shoulder belt does not cross the child's face or neck).

Time To Buy A Baby Mattress: What You Should Know

By Christopher Smith

Helpful tips for selecting the right mattress for your baby

When a baby is asleep, the mother is the one that will get the most rest (or so the saying goes). Therefore, a baby mattress is very important both for you and your baby as well. Babies require their sleep as much as the adults, and more so because most of their growing and development occurs during that time.

The Right Baby Mattress

A great place to find a good deal on a baby mattress is right in your local newspaper. You should find some listings from parents selling the mattresses their babies have outgrown, along with other baby related items as well. There are also numerous resources on the internet such as message boards, online newspapers and bargain or freebie sites, not to mention all of the online retailers anxious for your business.

Measure Twice

It's a wise idea to have all the measurements of the crib and nursery when looking for a baby mattress. This helps evade return trips to the retail store or the hassle of changing your order. You may be startled to find out that not all baby mattresses fit all cribs, although most are indeed common sizes.

Practice Practicality

A good baby mattress should be adjustable in order for you to be able to make it the right size for when the baby is asleep or awake. Another important factor for the perfect baby mattress is that it should be waterproof, as there might be the odds that you may have to clean it once or twice.

It is noteworthy you take everything in consideration when looking for a baby mattress including the size of the crib. Most famous brands offer a large number of baby mattresses which are not cheap, but definitely with many more features than previous generations had when they were babies. All these features help both the parents and the baby enjoy sleep when desired, without the continual awakening during the night and/or when the parent is just about to take a nap themselves.

Helpful Tips

If you are looking for bargain baby mattresses you can try local newspapers where locals will usually list the items their babies have outgrown. Other great places for bargains are online stores where they constantly compete with one another in order to win customers. This is especially true in the infant world where most parents are reluctant to spend huge amounts of money on something they know the baby is going to outgrow soon and therefore have no use for it.

If you have no choice but to purchase a baby mattress at the full price, you can always resell it once you don't need it anymore, thus getting at least part of your investment back. It is very important you assure your baby with the proper equipment in order for him or her to get the required sleep. You will have a happier, healthier baby and that will automatically make you a happier parent.

Lifestyle Changes For Kids Suffering From Diabetes

By Ashish Jain

Children grow fast. Diabetes in children is growing faster.

Well, diabetes in children is a recent phenomenon. Anything that is a recent phenomenon, lead us to the question mark, why and from where this disease has cropped up? What are the reasons for its arrival? When the reasons for its arrival are identified, the plans for its departure can also be formulated.

Juvenile diabetes is also known as Type I diabetes. This type of diabetes requires a regular shot of insulin for sustaining the body function! A child requiring insulin shots on regular basis- what a heart-rending sight it is! Many Children now have Type II diabetes also which was once considered as the disease that can attack only the adult population.

Whatever be the disease, you need first to know the root cause of the disease. Only by understanding the disease, you can decide the right course of treatment for it.

Even if there is a history of diabetes in the family, you should be careful about the factors that worked to make your child diabetic. Know for sure, why your child’s immune system should begin to generate cells that destroy the pancreatic cells responsible for producing insulin in the body at such a young age.

And now that juvenile diabetes is a reality with the life of your kid, to treat it is a double responsibility for you. Prepare the mind of the child to face the reality. Monitor his food intake and see whether your child is sticking to the schedule of exercises that you have framed for it in consultation with the medical practitioner. For, the first lifestyle change required in the child suffering from juvenile diabetes is regarding the diet.

This is the major part of the treatment along the medications. The concept of healthy living needs to be implanted into the mind of your child. Fast and junk foods are not good for the health of your child as such they should be removed from the list of its diet. Moreover, there should be a family discipline in eating the food. Don't eat when driving the car or while watching TV. Instead of giving heavy food to the child three times a day, give light food a number of times.

If your child is fond of fried potato chips, substitute it with dried fruits, variety of nuts instead. Take out the white bread from its menu and substitute it with whole grain bread. Avoid deep fried foods. Before the meals, give plenty of salads. Try to inculcate the habit of eating raw vegetables like carrot or fruits dipped in yogurt.

Make exercise and walking a family habit. This is all for modeling a healthy life style for curing your child of diabetes now.

Hannah Montana Halloween Costumes – Perfect For Those “Tweens”

By Janice Stoner

Well it’s that time of year again - the time when parents and kids start the annual quest to find that perfect Halloween costume. If your kids are anything like mine it goes something like this. “Well nobody is wearing that this year. Its way to lame” or one of my favorites – “I’m not a baby anymore I can’t ware something like that.”

If you’re the parents of a “tween” then you know the problems of being in the in-between age of 9 -12. For them nothing is quite right. For you everything they want you’re not comfortable with. The battle goes on – and it sure isn’t just about Halloween costumes… but that’s for another discussion.

It seems the problem is not always as bad for boys as it is for girls at this age. Girls always seem to end up being so dramatic in their dress and manner. Well luckily this year there is a solution – Hannah Montana to the rescue.

The hit Disney cable channel TV series starring Miley Cyrus as Miley Stewart aka Hannah Montana, has been extremely popular - probably more so than even Disney had expected. Everywhere you look there is Hannah Montana. This year particularly Hannah Montana Halloween costumes are going to be very popular with tweens. Hannah Montana has her distinctive style of teenage rock star attire. And while the bleach blond wig may leave a lot to be desired, you could probably live with it for one night.

Now one of the things you will need to consider is whether to make or buy your daughter’s costume. You could probably find a lot of the things you’ll need around the house. Certainly jewelry items, make-up and skirts are going to be the easiest to piece together. But take it from someone who has tried this before, the end result may miss the mark – especially in your tween’s view. I don’t know about you but I don’t have a lot of teenage bleached blond wigs lying around.

My suggestion is to forget trying to piece meal things together and go look for a complete Hannah Montana Halloween costume to buy. There is a big selection available this year that will have all the critical items you need – wigs, jewelry, boots, skirts etc. I’m sure your tween will thank you in the end.

The other terrific thing about the Hannah Montana theme is that it can be turned into a group theme including a great Halloween party idea. There is everything you need in the way of Hannah Montana decorations to put on a great costume party for your daughter and all her friends. I know it’s hard to imagine a house full of Hannah Montana look-a-likes running around but if Elvis can do it why not Hannah Montana?

So this year don’t fret about what’s going to happen on Halloween. Suggest to your daughter a Hannah Montana Halloween costume party. I’ll just bet she’ll think it’s a great idea – and really be surprised you came up with yourself. Have fun!

Taking Away the Keys: Don’t Wait for the Police to Call

By Aging Wisely

What to do when your loved one may not be able to drive anymore.

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that senior drivers are the only age group in recent years to experience an increase in road fatalities. Although seniors as a group are generally safe drivers, factors such as physical changes, illness, medication, and cognitive impairment may significantly impair a driver. Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for 65-74 year olds and crash rates for cognitively impaired/dementia drivers are 7.6 times higher than normal.

Many times as family members, we know that Mom or Dad may be declining, but we don’t know how or when to tackle this difficult issue and we may get a lot of resistance when we do. Here are a few pointers and resources when faced with this issue:

1. Do not assume your loved one is safe driving because he/she "only drives locally and follows the same routine". If he/she suffers memory loss, this can change in an instant. Many accidents happen close to home.

2. Get a professional opinion. Seek a driver evaluation for questionable cases (check your local Area Agency on Aging, hospitals, or ask a geriatric care manager). AARP offers safe driving program for seniors and driving programs may offer "driving rehab" or programs that help drivers compensate for certain physical losses, as well as suggest adaptive equipment or modifications.

3. Enlist the help of a trusted professional to talk to your parent (clergy, doctor, care manager, attorney). Knowing your loved one’s values and personality may help tailor the approach. Are they very law abiding and respectful of authority? Is Dad conservative and wouldn’t want to risk harming someone? (Remember, personality changes can occur with dementia, so normal approaches and logic may not work.)

4. Make an anonymous report to your DMV. In Florida, call 850-488-8982 or visit www.hsmv.state.fl.us to request form #72190. See also www.floridagranddriver.com for more information.

5. Know that, particularly with dementia, you may need to take additional steps such as selling or disabling the car or removing keys. Don’t expect your loved one to remember that they are not supposed to be driving if they have memory loss.

6. Prepare ahead of time, by exploring transportation options for your loved one. Loved ones may want to hire a companion a few hours/week to drive to appointments, errands, and have the freedom to get out of the house. Public transportation, nonprofits, and local agencies may offer rides for seniors, sometimes with eligibility requirements or only for specific trips such as medical appointments. Your local Area Agency on Aging (www.eldercare.gov) is a good place to start.

7. Help your loved one adjust. Explain and simplify transportation options (i.e. setting up an account with a taxi company to enable billing so cash exchanges aren’t required, noting phone #s and rules for transportation services by the phone, going along with your loved one on the route to make sure they can use the service and feel comfortable).

What Parents Can Do For Children Who Stutter

By Ainuddin Mohamad

Stuttering is a speech impediment that is caused when the regular speech pattern is interrupted by repeated syllable or letter sounds. This happens when a person cannot say the word all at once. The person may also experience tremors and eye blinking while stuttering.

Stuttering can happen while they’re talking to a bunch of people or to one person. In the UK, stuttering is referred to as stammering or disfluent speech.

There are about three million Americans that have been diagnosed with stuttering. It can affect anyone, but the group that it affects the most is children between the ages of 2 to 6 years old. This is the time that they are learning to talk and make sentences. In this age group, boys outnumber the girls in stuttering. With adults, the stuttering rate hovers around 1 percent.

Parents can treat developmental stuttering in their children by getting educated on what to do. They learn to restructure their child’s environment in order to decrease their stuttering. Here are some things that parents are encouraged to do or not to do, in some aspects:

* Allow an environment for the child where they are allowed to freely speak. Do not limit them to certain times when they can do this. This will end up being a distraction and a source of frustration for the child.

* Do not show negative feelings or criticize how the child speaks. Don’t go against them or inflict punishment because of their stuttering.

* Do not force them to repeat words until they can say them fluently.

* Do not force the child to verbally convey anything to other people.

* When the child speaks, make sure your attention is focused on them.

* Be relaxed and speak slowly. When they see a parent doing that, then they’ll follow their lead.

* Give the child a chance to say the word that they’re stuttering over. Don’t finish their sentences for them.

* If they should happen to bring up their stuttering problem, be willing to discuss it with them. It can help them get over their fears and frustrations they are experiencing.

* Provide the child a chance to speak during times when the family is together. A good example of this is during dinner when everyone is sitting around the table.

* Do not correct the child by telling them to “slow down”, “take your time” or “take a deep breath”. As a parent, the intentions may be honest, but the child will not accept that well. They will start to feel self-conscious about their speaking and it will further frustrate them.

* Do not advise the child to think about what they’re going to say before they say it.

* Do not expect the child to get every word or phrase on target when they’re speaking. They should be able to enjoy talking despite their speech condition.

* Provide the child with as much encouragement and love as you can. Let them know that they are not any different from anyone else even with the stuttering.

Some Things Are Harder Than the Birds and the Bees: Talking About My Child's Special Needs With Schoolmates

By Lisa Greene

I have to admit I was a little worried about how the talk at school would go. Even though I am well-trained in communicating with kids, I am still a mom first. And moms worry! It’s part of our DNA.

The kids had just started a new school and the teachers requested that I talk to their classmates about their medical issues. Both of our children have cystic fibrosis. They need to take medication (pancreatic enzymes) to help their food digest properly. Of course their classmates have noticed Jacob and Kasey chucking down a handful of pills at lunchtime and have barraged my children- and their teachers- with questions.

I spent a couple of hours preparing for the talk. I wanted it to be fun and informative- sort of like a health education class. Kids need visuals so I found a diagram of the digestive system that could be colored. Jacob and Kasey helped me gather some show-and-tell items: A nebulizer cup, an albuteral puffer, and opened up pancreatic enzymes placed in a baggie (kids always want to know “what’s inside”).

We decided together what to talk about and I gave them lots of choices: Do you want to talk or have me do it? Will you be with me or at your desk? Kasey (in first grade) decided to have me do all the talking but she would be my helper. Jacob (third grade) decided to do the talking about pancreatic enzymes and have me teach about the rest. We were prepared and the kids were excited. Kasey’s little girlfriends were buzzing with anticipation. They were all so curious about CF.

I was nervous. I do plenty of public speaking but I was more nervous about speaking in front of twenty first and third graders than 200 adults! These are my babies! And this is “life-and-death” stuff in front of their classmates. What if I blew it? One of my biggest fears was that a child would innocently ask, “Will Jacob (or Kasey) die from cystic fibrosis?” The honest “grown up” answer is, “It’s possible unless there is a cure since the median life expectancy is 37 at this time.” But that’s not something a 7-year-old needs to know in such stark terms- including my own! I wasn’t exactly sure how I would answer this question and I wasn’t sure if my kids really knew this reality. So, taking my cues from Dr. Foster Cline, I decided to ask them.

Preparing for the worst, I casually (but with heart pounding) asked my son, “So Jacob. What would you say if someone at school asks you if you can die from CF?” He thought for a moment. Then he said, “Well, I would say people do die from CF. But we are more likely to live longer when we take good care of our bodies.” Wow!! The answer of my dreams! He knows the reality of the situation but also understands the role he plays in taking responsibility for his healthcare. Plus he understands the long-term impact of his healthcare decisions.

That massively encouraged me. Later on, I asked Kasey the same thing. She said, “Well, you can but if you eat healthy and take all your medicine then maybe not.” Bingo! Two for two. Both kids have an understanding of the reality of cystic fibrosis and are hopeful about positive outcomes based on their personal choices about self-care. I have to say I was a little surprised. I didn’t think that children this young could have such a mature attitude and understanding of such a heavy situation.

The talks went well that day. All of the children were curious, open and delightful. We had a lot of fun together. Kasey even demonstrated chucking down four (big) enzymes in one swallow just before lunch. The kids couldn’t have been more amazed if it were a flaming sword!

And no one even asked the dreaded question. Go figure.

Cool Baby Shower Themes: Rubber Duckie Baby Shower

By Christopher Smith

If you're planning to host a baby shower and want a fun idea that symbolizes the innocence of early childhood, consider using a rubber duckie theme. The rubber duckie is timeless and can be very versatile in decorating. Keep reading for our ideas on how to incorporate this cool theme into your next baby shower.

Invitations

This is the first opportunity you have to let your guests in on the theme of the party. Look for invitations with ducks on them, or if you're feeling creative try creating your own invitations either by hand or with a computer.

Centerpieces

The options for centerpieces are endless! You could use a large glass bowl filled with water and have a large duckie or a few small duckies floating in it. This is also a great option for decorating side tables, using smaller bowls. To add more interest, add some decorative colored stones or even some plastic fish tank plants.

Another centerpiece option is to have a pair of small childrens rubber boots with a small glass in each one. Fill the glasses with water and an assortment of small flowers such as coral bells, pansies, carnations, babies breath, or freesias. The boots will tie in with your rubber duckie theme quite well since ducks are often linked with rainy weather.

Napkins

Scout the stores for napkins with rubber ducks on them. Also, pick up paper plates that match one of the colors in the napkins like yellow or orange. A bright color is best and will help to remind your guests that you are celebrating birth and childhood, when bright colors are best!

The Dreaded Hat

Yes, every guest of honor dreads the hat that is inevitably created from the ribbons and bows scavenged from shower gifts. Instead of using the traditional paper plate, consider using a yellow rain hat!

Cake

Of course it needs to either have a duck on it or be in the shape of a duck! As well, come up with a corny phrase for the occasion to be written on the cake.

Punch Bowl

Forget adding fruit to the ice ring, instead wash up some small rubber ducks and let them float in the punch bowl.

Having any kind of theme for your shower will help to alleviate some of the pressure of entertaining guests while they take in their surroundings. It also helps a shy guest of honor cope with being the center of attention, in this case some of the focus would be drawn toward the duckies.

If you've decided to use this theme, go wild with it! Give a special prize to the first guest to sing the Sesame Street Rubber Duckie song! This is a baby shower and the more effort you put into it the more fun your guests and your guest of honor will have. The decorations don't need to be expensive, a lot of these items can be purchased at a dollar store if you don't already have them. A few rubber ducks will go a long way!

How A Scooter Rental Can Save On Expenses

By Christopher Smith

There may come a time when you need a wheel chair for a short period of time, but they can be very expensive to buy. A better bet for short-term use is a wheel chair rental (also know as wheel chair hire in England and Australia). Much of the time, scooter rentals are covered by insurance just as purchasing one would be, but it's much less expensive and much more cost-effective. Additionally, you won't be buying something unnecessary that you won't have a call for long-term.

Another advantage of a scooter rental is that if something goes wrong with the wheel chair you're renting, it will be replaced at no extra cost with one that works. The medical supply company you're working with should be very understanding if you need your unit replaced for whatever reason.

It would be a rare occasion when a scooter rental would not be received in clean, working order and usually a simple phone call will get it replaced immediately, but most reputable equipment companies will not let that happen.

Keep Track Of Rates And Accessories

Many times a person using a scooter rental can also obtain the use of accessories such as carrying totes or arms totes and some companies will supply them free of charge as a customer perk. Others, however may charge an extra cost for their use, most likely not covered by insurance so you will want to check this out before the wheel chair rental company adds that charge to your bill.

Another benefit of scooter rental is there is usually no charge for pick up or delivery. You call and organize for its delivery and at the end of the rental period, they will return and pick it up. You would also have the option to extend the wheel chair rental period if needed.

Your choices for scooter rental are as varied as your choices to purchase a wheel chair are. You or your doctor will determine best whether you need a manual or power chair, and what features you will need on it. Many companies will also rent you a power chair at a reduced price in hopes that you will purchase one, so this is an option as well. Depending on your situation, you may find that a power wheel chair is worth the extra cost versus a manual one, because of the easier mobility you have with a power wheelchair, given that you don't have to push yourself.

Of course, "try before you buy," or in this case, rent. You'll need to see if the chair you chose fits through all spaces in your house and allows you to maneuver well. The rental company will likely have ideas for you if the one you chose does not fit, and they can bring you back one that does better.
